63Motorsport plates fitted - hot start rattle 5 weeks later
I own a 2012 c63 AMG wagon and 5 weeks ago I fitted the 63 Motorsport hardened cam adjuster plates along with the springs supplied. The old plates were pretty worn and the new ones seemes to solve the problem. All was well.
Five weeks later I seem to have a similar rattle on startup, however it only happens at certain times.
- Cold start first thing in the morning is always absolutely fine and zero rattle.
- If I run the car up to temperature, turn it off and then restart within 15 to 20 minutes, again no rattle.
- If I run the car up to temperature, turn it off and leave the car for an hour or so then restart, that's when I get the rattle.
I've done a bunch of research and called on chat gpt to help. Initial diagnosis was that there is hot soak drain back out of the oil filter housing which only happens when the oil is hot and thin (makes sense). This also seems to make sense that the cold oil would be thicker and less likely to drain out. The other suggestion was the timing chain tensioners.
The sound is pretty much identical to the worn cam adjuster plates rattles, albeit a bit louder than on the OEM adjuster plates. Other than this, the car seems to run pretty smoothly.
Any thoughts on this or has anyone experienced the same issue before I order a new oil filler housing as a starting point?
