I'm sure BMW and Audi will. Be forced to do the same.. I have no issue with a 4 cylinder amg.. I actually love driving the cla45/gla45.. Super fun cars.. But I think I'd need more to separate the cla and c amgs than some extra horsepower . Since awd, drift mode etc..

I guess this is why the US isn't getting the cla45 S. With that cars near 420 hp it dilutes a 4 cylinder c63 if the hp is too close

Nah, he's wrong. He's just doing it for clickbait. The 4 cylinder rumor was shot down a while ago. It seems to have been a case of broken telephone. Mercedes-AMG is developing a new V8 that, like the previous one, is based on the 4 cylinder engine. The current V8 is based on the M133 4 cylinder; the new one will be based on the M139 4 cylinder. The C63 will be the first, or one of the first, cars to get this new engine and it's going to be equipped with the *53 hybrid system and an electric compressor. The AMG GT R Black series will also most likely be using the same new engine.

"New engine based on the M139 4 cylinder but with hybrid tech" seems to have been misinterpreted as 'it will be a 4 cylinder engine" as opposed to "it will be a V8 based on a 4 cylinder engine just like the current V8 is".

BMW will not. It's already out that the G8x generation M3/M4 will be using the same B58 engine as the X3M/X4M which is the 3.0-liter inline-6 coupled to a twin turbo (no hybrid) and it will be AWD switchable to RWD (similar to MB Drift Mode). It's going to be interesting to compare the next generation of both cars as they both appear to be going in different directions.

Who shot down the 4-cylinder rumor a while ago? Autocar stated back in Oct 2019 that AMG will use the 4-cyl hybrid reasoning the M-139 four-cylinder engine already kicks out a maximum of 416bhp and 369lb ft of torque in non-electrified form (per the new A45 and its related siblings), so adding electric motors in hybrid will boost it past 500hp. This at least makes sense.

On the other hand, a turbo V8 should already post well past 500hp by itself. Adding hybrid technology should put it in near 600hp and into Mercedes' flagship AMG GT 63 category. That doesn't make sense unless they're going with a mild-hybrid 48V technology (instead of full hybrid) which the BMW next gen G8x will do.

If you have more substantive insight, please do tell.

more and more sources comfirm the 2L 4cylinder story. it will be the engine we know from the 45S series added with hybrid tech.
i'm guessing the 43 model will have the same eninge and output like the regular 45 and the 63 should be changed to some number > 45 and < 53 imo...
no more 6 cylinders so this also go for the 400 and the 43 nor does it make sense that a 53 model has a 3L 6 cyl and a 63 would have a 2L 4cyl...

What sources are these? Almost all articles seem to be cut and paste of the Autocar one, with only Mr AMG adding to that Rumor.

It's hard to tell from a business standpoint whether this is true since the market is still very much V8 centric (for now). If they go the 4 cyl or 6 route then it would be hard to justify sales for a 90k+ car when you have many other options from AMG or M that provide better value at a lower price point.

I have to search but here in Europe everyone knows the eu rules become so ****ed up its impossible to have so many v8 models and even more, sell such a high percentage of the total volume. Both Mercedes and amg stated a few times already they have the tech thx their F1 team and want to display this in more then only the amg one project.
We all love the v8 but a 4cyl will save much weight, provide more space and for the sound we don't need the v8 anymore again thx to ever stricter eu rules. With all the autonomous driving the end of fun cars is near anyway. Maybe 10 more years before cars drive us around?

V8 is dead in Europe, both co2 and nox regulations prohibit to manufacture non compliant cars. Exhaust sound is a serious issue as well. Cars will be silent on the outside and fake amg noises over your speaker system on the inside. The guzzling rattling groundshaking v8 culture is over in Europe, which means US will probably follow. Unless the US market is big enough to warrant continuing v8’s US only models, but don’t think so.

Sad but likely true unless MB wants to continue paying those hefty fines. The future generation of cars buyers will never know the thrill of a V8, or sounds of a throaty exhaust so they will have nothing to compare to.

I really wanted a C63S awd and thought that 2021 would be the year. But with all the talk about a 4banger replacing the V8, I sold my 350 3 weeks ago and picked up a 2020 C63S. Loving it! Being that it's RWD, it gave me an excuse to buy an F150 4x4 for the times that I need it. :-). After 3 weeks I'm at 700 miles. Still haven't gone past 4500rpm as per the break in procedure.

The Autocar article was just "we heard from someone" and they was never any follow up to it. All the other articles on the topic, including this video are just repeating what Autocar said, again, with no follow up or additional information. However, there have been several articles about a new V8 that AMG is working on that will be based on the M139 four cylinder. It's been caught being tested in a previous gen E Class coupe and an AMG GT coupe (remember when people also claimed that the GT Black series would be powered by the same 4 cylinder and the weight savings would make up the performance difference?) There's a reason why, after almost a year, we never heard anything more about the supposed switch to a 4 cylinder for the C63.

The more I think about this, the less sense it makes. What does make sense is for the C43 to get the 4 cylinder. It currently puts out 385 HP so the 416 from the 4 cylinder is a nice bump; maybe detune it slightly to 395 HP or something and put it on the regular production line. That would leave room for the C63 to get the updated 4.0L V8 with EQ Boost that's currently in the GLE 63. Even if they keep the C63 at 469/503 HP the EQ Boost is good for another 21 HP which would put it at 490/524 HP. That would also explain the original rumor, the C43 moves to a 4 cylinder and the C63 gets a hybrid engine. It's all correct, just not applicable to a single vehicle. I can see them moving all the *43 vehicles over to the 4 cylinder. It would quickly lower development costs since your would have the engine doing double duty in regular MBs and AMGs just like the 4.0 V8.

Right now the M276 V6 is used in 6 vehicles:

- C43
- C400
- GLC43
- S560e
- S320 (China only)
- BJ90 (China only, it's essentially a slightly enlarged GL Class)

Moving over to the 4 cylinder would mean that they're now using a brand new engine that can easily meet ever tightening pollution regulations. It also means simplifying their gasoline engine line up and, as an added benefit, it would reduce the cost of the S320 and BJ90 in China because China taxes cars based on engine displacement. Engines 3.0L and larger are in a separate tax bracket; that's part of the reason why Audi made its high end twin turbo V6 that goes in some S and RS cars as wells as Porsche and Bentley hybrids 2.9L.

Who knows, I could be completely wrong and maybe the C63 will get the 4 cylinder. However, to me, my reasoning makes a lot more sense then all these YouTubers and new car sites that are just repeating a 1 year old Autocar rumor that has had nothing to back it up and hasn't been followed up on.

So you’re saying you put an order in and it’s a V8? You sure it’s the new generation? I think the new generation is 2021 not 2020, but I could be wrong.

If you did put an order in and it’s the next gen and a V8 then that’s awesome!!!!!!!

I meant to say “I think the new generation is 2022.” But if you’re saying you put in an order for a 2021 and it is next gen then your word definitely has more value than mine.

That’s great news and congrats!

Sorry, but if you ordered a 2021, that's not the next gen. That's still the current gen V8 W205. The next gen W206 hasn't even been announced nor unveiled. Nobody is placing orders for them at this point. The regular C Class W206 will most likely be announced as a 2022 at this point and the C63 will follow as a 2023. It will have 4Matic+ and no V8. That's pretty much all but fully confirmed at this point. 4Matic+ has already been confirmed, but the exact engine configuration has yet to be announced. So much is clear, though, it won't be the current V8. It spews out way too much CO2.

Unfortunately you are wrong and may be my wording is off .

1. The 2020 build orders are over .
or should be in 1 week
2. dealers have the new 2021 build docs .
- minus the slight changes , engine
V8 not V8!
3. My order is simply that .
the order haven’t opened yet I’m just in line .
4. Now ! Once it’s unveiled I assure you
my order will go through . It will be next gen
new body style , etc etc
5. Builds should start Sept and next gen Cs hitting dealers Late Dec or Jan

Remember BMW and AMG go head to head .
they release on the back of each other .
this Aug 2020

1. Next Gen AMG visually released AUG
2. Dealership order and allocations are open now at selected dealers with or without a deposit . Speak to a rep
3. Cars arrive US shores late Dec at dealership a Q1 2021

there is no 2022 next gen

only
Q1 BMW next gen M4
and
Q1 AMG C63 Or C63s
