C 63 S W205 vs C 63 S W206 Drag Race (Car Wow)

Darn impressive showing from the C 63 S W205, a lot closer compared to what the specs would suggest.

Although gotta say, I was impressed with the top end from the C 63 S W206.

The main "edge" the W206 C 63 S have on the W205 is 4MATIC, but that isn't really an advantage for those who prefer to RWD only.

That said, I am not one of those so if W205 C 63 S had a 4MATIC option, I would had got it over the C 43, need it for Canadian winters.

Back to the video... I wonder why he didn't use the facelift C 63 S.

Yeah the W206 has the power to weight ratio and AWD advantage for the first 10 seconds. After that the power to weight ratio actually drops below the W205 due to the over 100hp reduction in power in the W206. Also agree on why not use the FL. The 9-speed has a gearing advantage. The FL is actually slightly faster than the pre-FL due to the shorter gearing. Overall I'd expect the W206 to be faster in a straight line, so that's not much of a surprise, but as they say, a lot going on with the W206. Two gearboxes and all. What makes the W205 interesting is all the theatrics and the hooliganism of RWD. Driving fun wins over performance for me.

I just watched the video, apparently Matt explained the power and others are the same for both pfl and fl, while he forgot about the transmission and traction system and differential differences you mentioned.

To sum up: If you get a C 63 you want the experience, be it the driving dynamics, the V8, the rawness of the car that brings the smiles.

If you want straight line performance, you get an electric vehicle or EQ model, MB fails to understand customers' needs.

Correct, engine power and torque are the same, but the FL due to the lower gearing makes more wheel hp and wheel torque in the first 7 gears compared to the PFL.

Agreed. Would have liked to see the FL W205 C63 at least.

Also would have been interested to see what happened if he put the W206 in Drift mode (RWD only mode) to see if that levelled the playing field at all.

Sorry about that, when I mentioned differential differences, I forgot it wasn't applicable to the S model.

Basically I was talking about e-diff that the facelift non S now also has when it was exclusive to the S version pre-facelift, without realizing we were talking about the S version all along.

So basically there are no real/any changes to the differential between facelift and pre-facelift for the S. I guess other than the 3000 mile fluid change is no longer required?

The traction system and the transmission differences you mentioned should be the only differences that mattered in this race. There is of course all the technology like light differences, suspension comfort differences but I guess it wouldn't had mattered for this race.

Thanks for your explanation on the transmission differences.

I had the same thought. It'd be interesting to see that. Only issue is that for drift mode, ESP has to be completely turned off, whereas the FL W205 has the 9-stage TC to play with. That's my main beef with drift mode. It's all interesting, but other than on the track with plenty of space you'll probably never put it in drift mode just to experience RWD. With the FL W205 you don't have to completely abandon all safety systems to have RWD fun. You can gradually dial it back to ESP Sport, then ESP off, but still maintain some level of TC

There are differences to the e-diff in the FL. It's faster acting than in the PFL and is now controlled by the new AMG DYNAMICS chassis dynamics system. So it's much more integrated in the overall dynamics of the car as well as the 9-stage TC. Definitely a bunch of improvements. The FL is better at putting down the power in general.

I didn't know about the differences with the e-diff between pre and post facelift, now I am really looking forward to Matt if he can redo this drag race but with the facelift C 63 S, this time perhaps sedan or coupe as well. Should be interesting.

I think with the FL, the roll race would have been a lot closer. Although I gotta say I was impressed with the fact that the W206 overtook the W205 at the top end (140 mph +) not the other way around, same thing it did with the G80 M3. Other than that, darn impressive showing from the W205. For a 10 year older car, down 170hp to be that close.

is there any headroom in the W206's engine for additional hp via a simple tune? Given how integrated the whole hybrid system is, I think that would be a problem even if it were possible. Meanwhile the W205 is a reflash away from uncorking another 100-150 hp. I hate stock vs modded comparisons but I think in this case it's an advantage worth mentioning.

Regardless of that I couldn't care less over a 1/2 second gap when I'm listening to the glorious roar of a V8 instead of...something better off not mentioning at all.

Id assume so since the CLa45 engine is tunable... but the programs will have to consider the ev driven wheel speeds/acceleration

I love the V8... will be hard to replace

Agreed and agreed. Also don't forget that this engine isn't quite the same engine as the CLA's and is already pumping out an additional 100 (or so?) hp.
