good question... I've seen some articles saying Electronic as well as Hydraulic... I would say Electronic though... BMW & Porsche have it so Merc is going to play the keep up with the Smith's

So the new engine is called the M177? Why do they need to differentiate it from the engine in AMG GT?

Found that here:

Because the engine is detuned and some of the internals have been changed for the M177 vs the AMG GT M178

I think the main difference is the M178 has dry sump lubrication whereas the M177 does not. I'm sure there are other differences as well. I wouldn't say it's detuned as the C63-S variant actually has more tq than the M178 in the GT.

yes. and maybe they don't want to cheapen the AMG GT with our lowly C63

2014 E63S; AMS 100 octane ecu tune; edok tcu tune; BB intakes; dyno tuned
I wonder if this will be like the e63 in that more people buy the s model over the base model by far.

The only thing that it preventing this c63S from being as quick in the 0-60 and 1/4 as the e63S now is 4-matic as I see it (stock for stock)

Also will be curious to see real world dyno's and see if these m177's are underrated ... Likely they will be

We live in exciting times for cars

Perhaps that's one of the reasons why they are not offering it at the moment. I say screw it and release the AWD beast!

Delaying the awd model keeps the extra weight off the press release for the unveiling. The curb weight is already a little high as it is, most were expecting it to be a little lighter. So adding awd will put it over 4,000 lbs.

I believe awd will come, but in a couple years. By then what ever the curb weight of the new C63 is or isn't, adding awd weight won't be an issue.

2012 c63 sedan
If they release the wagon, I will trade my c63 in now! Wagon lovers, lets unite and start a petition to get it brought over to USA!!

Anyone heard of rumors that the 2016-17 E63 will change from 5.5V8 TT to this engine? I keep reading/ hearing this.. I don't see why they would, but understand that its more cost effective and m177 probably gets better mpg/ emissions

Yea, not sure if I am digging that....it looks like when I see someone driving an E350 who bought and aftermarket badge and stuck it on to make it an AMG car without consideration that they left the 350 badge still on. I did like the tiny AMG badge within the front grill though.

Agree with you.......heck, retune the engine (or Eurocharged or someone will surely be waiting) to get more power to compensate for the AWD losses and ship them over :-)

AWD has nothing to do with why the C63 Wagon isn't sold here. The C Wagon itself isn't sold here because of low demand, nothing to do with AWD.

Yup. Would cost Mercedes too much to bring it to North America because people don't buy wagons here. Instead, they buy big, fat, heavy, retarded SUV's with 550 HP which if you think about it, is really stupid.

That is one very sick little puppy. I also noticed the switching of the badge locations. Is that something they are considering for all AMG's? Quite interesting.

Hoping they don't. That's like the 2010-11 E63s having the same M156 as the W204 C63. Factory is detuned but how many AMG drivers really keep their vehicles stock? Especially when those are Factory ponies waiting on the table. Regardless, the C63 was a lot faster once they had the same mods, and just IMHO I don't think AMG wants that.

Now another idea perhaps they keep the displacement of the M157 and take the Hot V Twin Turbo setup from the M177 and make a 5.5L Hot V8 Engine. I recall I heard that idea in an article but can't be sure.

The new E-Class is going ride on the same new MRA platform introduced on the C-Class W205. So you can bet that it will also share very similar drivetrains - including the M177 4.0T. The E-Class won't need as much displacement as the last gen since it will be shedding weight similar to how the C-Class did with the MRA platform.

Wouldn't surprise me if the M177 eventually made its way into an LCI S63...

The real question is... can they squeeze 577hp out of the M177?
If they cant then there is now way we will see that motor in the E63 unless they decide to go hybrid.

I think the engineers could sneeze on this engine and make 577hp out of the M177. Tuners are probably already salivating over 100+hp ECU-only flashes.

Tobias Moers mentioned that there is a lot of power left on the table with the current M177 tune, so it wouldn't surprise me if we see this engine hitting upwards of 600 HP in the larger AMG models and/or Black Series.

It's also worth noting that every model on the MRA platform is getting a reduced curb weight, so you simply don't need something as large as a 5.5l bi-turbo. The 4.0T will still make good power and better fuel economy.
