They're both on the same level to me. I've had both engines.

Personally can't comment on this one until I get the chance to test drive a 205 C63 for myself

However based on peoples reviews vids etc. and my own personal liking to FI vs N/A engine sounds on same configuration of engine type I'm sure I'm going to vote for the new 205 as better overall, that and the fact that obviously built in from OEM you can adjust the sound level as well.

I'd say the 204 sounds a bit meaner. But the new one sounds really good too.

No load parking lot rev is not indicative of driving sounds imho.

We have both in our stable and the perf ex 205 is much more aggressive than the 204.

i have owned both and the w205 will make more aggressive sounds more often in almost every driving scenario, especially with the performance exhaust turned on. The w204 will make less sound and make sound in fewer scenarios, but the w204 will have a sound at higher rpm that you will really only hear from an NA motor. w205 will have more sound, popping etc at lower RPMs and daily driving speeds. The w205 sounds damn good for a turbo car, miles better than an m4. its really apples vs oranges though turbo motor vs NA motor.

This is a good summary.

As a current W204 (M156) owner that has experienced both the M177 and M178 motors, the wail of the M156 at full chat is something special.

Downshifts in S, S+, and M w/ the M156 sound absolutely diabolical as well.

That said, the existence of turbos in the M177 help to produce all kinds of glorious noises that you don't get with NA motors. You've got the induction noises plus all of the crackles, bangs, and overrun pops.

Simply put, as fantastic as the W204 sounds, AMG did a great job with the W205. You can't directly compare the engine/exhaust notes because they have substantially different characters but overall, both sound like V8-powered cars should.

This debate is probably never going to end. People have their own preferences when it comes to sound. Some might be biased one way or the other. A good point that has been made is that AMG did a fantastic job at making the new W205 sound much better then originally anticipated due to knowledge that they were incorporating turbos in the design of the new engine. I am sure that even the diehard W204 fans, including myself, were surprised by the new sound. You must give credit where credit is due.
