Early Oil Change?

AMG recommends NO early oil change after break in.
They do ask for rear diff oil change at 3000km.

At almost 5000 km now I have the urge to change the engine oil. In all my previous cars I did.

Hell, reading the problems with the new Corvette engine failures, GM asks to change the oil after 500 mi to avoid break in debris from damaging the engine. I know it's not comparable but still .....

It's under warantee but engine empathy is useful, specially if one intends to drive the car as it was meant to be driven.

Anyone else?

Mine should be here about Sept. 1 or there about.
I think I will do an oil change at the same time as the diff. service at 2k miles.
I know these engines are well done and don't have the problems of yore but!!!!

Early Oil Change?

I changed mine at 1,000 miles. I can't imagine an early change causing any problems.

It's only an oil change dude. Go ahead and get it done if it's causing you this much anxiety. It's not like you're asking about rod bearings or something else major.

As have a few others, I did my first Oil change at the same time as the rear-diff.

Why would they recommend NOT to do it? Odd...

Don't worry so much.

Oil change should be done at the same time as the differential.

Did my own today.

Surprising, the main oil drain bolt is plastic and comes off with a light turn of a screw driver. There is an rubber O ring and the thread is coarse. Be careful with it. The oil filter is below next to it and uses a paper filter insert but much narrowewr that previous versions.. A secondary metal drain is further front to drain another 1/2 L or so of oil.

It takes 9L to fill.

Of course, we know more than those that designed and build the vehicle.

Why in the world, would they suggest that the car could go 10K between changes if that wasn't the case. It would be in their own interest to recommend more frequent changes if they were actually needed.

A lot has changed with both engines and oil since the days of the 5000KM oil change interval.

Mine took 9.5 L so you are basically right on how much oil it took. The plug is actually not meant to be re-used. You are suppose to replace it each time you do a oil change.

+1

My Bimmers have received their first oil change/service whenever the computer recommended, which has been as high as 19k miles. This includes 450-550hp cars. No issues, thus far.

The dealer knows nothing about replacing it. There is a small O ring like the filter cap, maybe that's all that needs replacement.

For anyone doing their own oil changes should they still buy a OEM filter so incase of a engine failure they (MB) don't disallow the warranty because of a after market filter?

The dealer did the differential oil change at the 1850 mile mark, along with new front brakes (they were squealing), windshield wiper change (they were squealing) and an update to the system which was alerted by an engine check light being on.

3 months with the car and it has 1850 miles, I need to get out more...

You should always use the OEM filter so that you can take advantage of the long oil change intervals. I'm sure they're are always other brand that support the long intervals, but you just have to do your research before using them. In other words, don't buy a $3 generic filter and expect factory oil change intervals.

I have the PPM on my car but am still planning on changing the oil every 5000 miles. I just don't feel comfortable waiting 10000 miles for one. The first one comes at the same time as the diff, the next one at 5000 miles and then every 5000 miles.
