Do I Sell My BS To Buy The New Coupe?!
Maaaan oh man...My salesman at the dealership I use just sent me the order guide for the new coupe...and now I'm in one hell of a pickle, lol!
So, I have a 2012 C63 Black Series. It has about 17.5k on the clock and I've added Weistec Tune, Headers, Exhaust, TCU Valve/tune, and ROW Intake...she sounds like an absolute BEAST. However, pretty much my only complaint is the transmission. At first I was going to sell this car for a manual, but after seeing the new coupe I think I at least need to test drive the sedan to see what this new tranny feels like.
But then I move onto my 2nd issue, depreciation. I feel fairly confident saying I don't think the market for the Black Series will drop all that much if any more than it's currently at. However, if I buy a brand new coupe, I'm positive that it'll depreciate, it's just what new cars do. Now how much will it go down and how quickly, I have no idea.
Anyways, just wanted to get your take on it...was anyone in a similar position and went for a new sedan or possibly already placed their order for the new coupe?
Cheers

I think the new Coupe is a serious jump forward in styling / tech and drivetrain.
I would take a new coupe over a used BS everytime.
But thats just me

Yeah, you could be right. I guess I should say I'm in a fairly safe spot with where I'm at on my car...BUT, if the new coupe really is that much of a jump forward then I think that will add to the depreciation of the BS. It would be something a buyer would need to think about. Spend $80-100K+ (if it has aero pack) on a used 2012-2013 BS or buy a brand new C63 AMG S for that.

There is definitely a market for your car and they are still pulling good money....but the logic and questions you're asking yourself are probably the same ones a potential buyer would be asking.
Unless they have their hearts set on a BS

If you even have to think about it..... Do not get rid of the BS for the new coupe. Wait a while for all the bugs to get worked out, then decide. Also every car will depreciate, the new coupe will be just like the normal w204. The BS will hold its value better in the long run, but that shouldn't be the main reason to buy or not buy these cars.

That's a big statement. I'm sure no one thought they would produce a M156 V8 but they did, I'm sure no one thought they'd see 5.5L biturbo v8's. I'm sure down the line they will find a way to produce another naturally aspirated V8.

I think the only way they'll make another n/a V8 is if it has a KERs system. Tobias has said as much in recent interviews, noting that the future of AMG lies in gas-electric hybrid systems.
I think this TG interview with Andy Cowell is fascinating, too (the guy is genius):
http://www.topgear.com/car-news/secr...le-f1-engine#1
Downsizing with turbos and electrification seems to be the plan. Frankly, I'd be shocked if they came with another large displacement n/a V8. The B.S. is truly a bookend to a great period of performance cars.

Personally if I were you id keep the BS based on its investment potential in the long run. However if your heart is set on the new coupe wait until the end of the first production year so that any issues that arise with the car are addressed.

I couldn't disagree more with the majority of you.
The car has been discontinued and replaced. Was it the last normally aspirated V8 MB will produce? Lets say for arguments sake it is... because of the new emission laws. So what? Do you think that alone will make this the holy grail of collectability in 20 years?
One of the main reasons all of those muscle cars of yesteryear were so valuable is that the companies that made them stopped making muscle cars and high HP engines. MB is doing the opposite. The new engines that replace the normally aspirated ones produce MORE torque and MORE hp, not less.
You want a 480 hp non turbo or 600lb turbo? (for example) because thats where they are going.
And to further support my position, the resale value of the older MB is falling monthly, not holding fast or increasing. If the collectors thought that this would be that valuable in years to come they would be buying them up for top dollar like the first ford GT's, Dodge Vipers, etc..
The ONLY reason I could see to keep it is that you have so much money into the car with all of the tuning and aftermarket parts that you can't get out of it and would take too big a hit on it. If you could get out even or a slight loss this would be a no brainer to me.
Sell the BS and buy the coupe..

I am in a similar boat as you my friend.
Not sure if you have test driven the w205 yet but I've gotten to do a few back to back drives while I try to make a decision.
For me the only reason I'm thinking about the 205 is because I need distonic (what a stupid reason I know)
As a black series driver I will say the w205 is really really awesome. Engine/exhaust sound are loud with that burble we love. I think with performance exhaust it's louder then our cars.
Steering felt more accurate and also more responsive.
Driving it the car felt planted at all times.
Transmission was similar but better.
Interior is miles ahead.
Exterior is subjective so I won't go into that. I am one of the people who love the 205. But we can all agree the 205 even in coupe form will not be a car crane their necks to see like the black series is. Especially when the standard coupe is flooding he streets. I don't particularly care about the attention part so I still love the 205.
With all that said every time I got back into the black series it just felt more raw in every category I listed above. Engine more raucous. Handing more alive. Etc. I would have no hesitation moving to a 205 at all but it does feel a bit muted compared to the black series. It's almost the exact same difference when going from the clk black series to the c63 black series.
Now people say the 205 coupe is a little more raw the sedan so this may all be wrong once the coupe comes, we shall see.
For now I'm sticking with the 204 black series because u only live once. But the allure of the 205 continues to call. Let me know if you do switch, I would really love to hear your impressions !

That car had nearly 100,000 miles and is not representative of the overall market for C209 BS. Unfettered, low mileage examples are appreciating.
Investment potential? What's your reference point? Investments have returns. This is a depreciating asset. The are more vehicles than there is demand. Everyone who wants one can get one.

Lol virtually every single all original CLK63 BS for sale right now with between 10,000 and 30,000 miles is over $65,000. Some of them are approaching $80,000. That is more than they were going for a year ago. Hence they are appreciating.
I'm not sure why you're citing the original MSRP and availability as both are irrelevant to the question of whether or not these cars are currently going up in value.
