Ahem! What's going on here
Same engine with slight differences. Of course different software and transmission.

M176 will be used in all future non-AMG V8 models. M177 is for C63, M178 for GT and M179 will power E63 and now rumored GLC63.
Why would it bother you?

R&D is costly. Reusing the basic design in multiple configurations is how you defray the cost of that R&D. The simple fact is, MB is using this basic engine in lots of applications means 1) it's reliable and 2) it's got tons of rooms to grow. This all equates to: Tons of aftermarket potential.
It's win-win for most everyone, except the wah-wah-wannabe-speshul crowd.
The Best of Mercedes & AMG

There are going to be many variations of this engine in different states of tune - the C63, C63 Black Series, E63, G550, AMG GT, AMG GT-R, AMG GT Black Series will all have different "tweaked" versions of the same engine with different hardware and software (most likely turbochargers, cooling, tuning, etc.).
In the grand scheme of things, this is not a bad thing! If anything, it opens up the aftermarket because there are several platforms using a variation of the same engine.

Speaking for myself that's where it all begins to get foggy, I too as others have mentioned couldn't really care less about the extensive use of an engine type in a particular manufacturers range or that one or two variants are being hand assembled whilst others are machine assembled, but when they start being used in competitors vehicles as well then that's another matter.
At the end of the day as is the case on many other related topics it's all about making money and all manufacturers will do whatever it takes to generate more revenue for themselves.
The nice advantage here is that if there's a more powerful application for that engine, say.. bigger turbos and more aggressive tune.. it means the other vehicle models that use that same basic engine can take advantage of it.
It also means a MUCH bigger total addressable market for the aftermarket, which makes it much more compelling to make products for. There's a good reason why BMW's aftermarket is so much more prevalent in the last decade.. BMW has been iterating on the same N54 engine all this time, and shoehorning it up and down the line. That makes a lot more cars that can take the same general tune.
Look for turbo size and intake/exhaust as the next powertrain differentiators.....
