Weird Rattle Under hard acceleration

Hi all - not sure if anyone else has experienced this or perhaps knows what this is...

I have a 2016 C63S (8 months old) and recently noticed a weird metallic sounding rattle from the engine when under hard acceleration. To best reproduce the noise... if I am in manual transmission in 3rd gear with revs sitting at around 1500-2000 and then put my foot down on the accelerator, it starts to pull with normal sound, then as you feel the torque kicking in a metallic rattle becomes quite noticeable. First gear I cannot pick up the noise and in second it is there but the power delivery is so quick with high engine noise that its hard to pick up... but third and fourth its easily noticeable.

MB dealership came with for a test drive, noticed the noise and said it shouldn't be doing that. Left the car with them for a day and they gave it back to me making the same noise and simply said its something MB Germany are aware of and are working on a software update for it? Said it might have something to do with the fuel injection???

MB also said its not something to worry about and when the software update is released they would call me in for the update?

Does this sound right to you guys? Apologies for the query but I'm not very mechanically minded and to me a noise like that is concerning for 1, and also I'm not sure how a software update would resolve a mechanically metallic sounding noise...?

After 3 visits to MB who were convinced it was an issue with the fuel injection and have updated software and tried all sorts ... still no luck.

After various road tests with MB engineers and explaining noise difference between having performance exhaust flaps open and off... they were still convinced it was something to do with fuel injection.

Yesterday had another visit booked in and road tested with another MB engineer and showed him the differences, immediately he said it sounds like butterfly flaps in the exhaust system are faulty. They have ordered new ones and will go back when they have arrived to have replaced and hopefully this resolves the problem

Hope none of you have had any similar issues...

Hi Sabre1978, I also own and 2016 C63S (Sedan) since April 2016 and I have been experiencing the exact same issue as you. The dealership said it was a normal sound but I am not convinced.

Do you have any updates on the source of the rattling noise? Was it coming from the fuel injectors or the butterly flaps in the exhaust system?

Hi Chrisephemere - yes my issue has been completely resolved.

It was an issue with the butterfly flaps. MB had to replace a large section of the exhaust as it is one piece apparently which also incorporates the electronics for the butterfly flaps. Once this new exhaust was replaced the car sounds absolutely perfect again and no hint of the rattling noise as before

I would push them hard to have this done if you're experiencing the same issue that I was having. Best of luck to you, I know how annoying it is with the rattle. Let me know how you get on mate.

Thanks Sabre1978, will definitely push them and keep you updated. I'm glad I found someone who had the same issue (I'm not that crazy after all!) and more pleased to hear you no longer have that issue!

Yeah I was also going mad over it ... but was pleased the MB engineers recognized that the noise was weird, however not pleased that they had no clue as to what it was after a few visits. When they fobbed me off on the software upgrade due to fuel injectors I knew they were full of BS. There is no way software is going to clear up a mechanical sounding rattle...

Anyway its sorted. Hope you get yours done and fixed mate! It does make you appreciate the sound just that little more when it sounds right again

What happens if you change to 2nd gear when the rattling starts?
I've experienced something like this before in a different car - basically I was in a gear higher than I needed to be for the speed I was travelling and even light acceleration was causing the car to vibrate / rattle. Might be a dumb suggestion but definitely worth trying to see if it makes a difference.

I have the same exact issue.
The dealer took a test drive with me.
Do you have the AMG Sport Exhaust? Or do you have the button in the middle console, to make the exhaust sound louder/softer? You will notice when you disable this button, the noise goes away. Which makes them suspect, that the actuator/flap inside the exhaust is rattling.
They have just replaced the actuator, and it is only slightly better. They contacted Germany, and they confirmed this is a problem.
The dealer is now waiting for a solution from Germany.
Let me know if they found a solution for your car.
I am in South Africa.
Thanks
Rudi

Hey Rudi, the problem has been acknowledged by AMG according to my MB dealership. AMG sent them a replacement part of the exhaust (where I suspect the faulty butterfly flap motor was located) and guess what? No. More. Weird noise. The metallic rattling noise under load at any rpm or gear change (when sport + exhaust is activated) is completely gone (since it got fixed last month). It took the dealership a while because I think not every C63s owner detects that noise because it's faint and even if they did they don't necessarily think it's abnormal. So perhaps it took a bit longer for AMG to update their "frequently encountered issues" worldwide database. That is if the MB dealership is competent enough to actually side with the owner: the first dealership I visited basically dismissed my claim altogether (Mercedes-Benz Montreal Silverstar. 2 thumbs down). Only the second dealership (Mercedes-Benz Rive Sud. Shout out to them!) stuck with me and were willing to get to the bottom of this. Whatever your dealer says, I would insist on them submittting the issue to AMG or check their known issues database. Most W205 C63s are still under warranty so the dealerships should have no problem fixing it.Thanks to mbworld.org for letting us know we are not alone with this issue! So satisfying to get a proper exhilarating engine and exhaust sound.
