That's a step in the right direction everybody else is or will be doing the same, definitely moving forward from "old hat" analogue dial gauges and it's about time
Hope they advance the HUD in MB's as well, the current set up is mediocre to say the least.
By the tail end of 2019 we should also see hybrid/electrification of drive trains in one form or another on most models and this will spread across the board with all manufacturers due to new emissions laws/standards post 2020, a good indication of what MB will do will be when we see the new AMG GT 4 door and E Class AMG E53 later this year.
Exciting times ahead

Damn, I decided to not cancel my order due at the end of the month. I want that dash! I all fairness the analogue gauges the current model are very nice, I love how responsive they are.
New screen too...
New screen too...

If I was about to buy a car new I would definitely wait for the facelift. However if you want to save money you could go that route I did and get a very good deal on a pre-owned or used model if the digital dash isn't a necessity for you

This is nearly always the case that the best stuff is towards the end of a model cycle run and I for one have changed my train of thought to be patient and wait till that time before buying any new car, instead of buying/updating at the beginning of a new model release, buy/update towards the end - always better with no regrets

Like AV1 mentioned there are a lot of implications with this... If you're attracted to the new face-lift/upgrades you might as well upgrade.
I'm more keen to see if there are any performance updates... looking at the new line up of AMGs (E63s, GLC 63s, CLS63s etc) all have a lot more HP.

the 9 Speed MCT is actually pretty damn good. Tested an E63s a few weeks back and the transmission was butter smooth. Simultaneous downshifts are still a bit slow (quicker than ours though) but upshifts are snappy as hell.
on another note I quite like these interior spyshots, the new wheel looks cool with the gloss black trim, the larger and wider screen for comand and retaining the tubular look of the instrument cluster even though the gauges are now virtual is a nice touch.

Next fall may be too long for me to wait for the facelift and even then I'm still not sure they will do much with the exterior (which IMO is where the sedan is really lacking).

I think the steering wheel will be the only thing that might be a plug and play in this situation.

It would be interesting to see how the E's virtual cockpit and the S's virtual cockpit have been implemented.
It would be nonsensical to have a separate xCU for just the dash, versus one that's integrated to drive the screen and video receiving inputs from the modules already in place.
In other words, from an engineering and design perspective, assuming VLSI principles are still used to save costs and make repair easier (aka more expensive), they'll try to incorporate more into a single "unit" whenever possible.
So, again - just me being hopeful....
Oh, and being as the cluster is so damn easy to remove....

I don't want to put you off your game plan as info is not 100% concrete BUT the biggest external visual changes in the 205 AMG series will be on the sedan variant - it's not an unknown fact that there's a wide body W205 AMG C63 with similar pumped flares to the coupe seen on numerous occasions, friend of mine who works for AMG here in Aust. told me they were working on one the last time he was in Affalterbach in June, so just let your mind wonder
