Winter wheel/tire setup

Things are still pretty nice out but looking at winter wheel/tire packages. I'm thinking an 18" wheel would be nicer for winter and cheaper tire packages. Any recommendations? I'm not too picky. Would prefer a better deal/ better winter grip than looks for a few months. It's my first winter with the car. My m3 on all seasons was miserable and I won't do that again.

do you have a performance package with the red brake caliper? if so 18' is too small and wont fit.

Tirerack is your friend, they will narrow down what fits and what not

Since you have a C63S 18s will not fit. you have the larger brakes in the front so you need 19's to clear.
I ended up putting a set of Vredstien Wintrax on my OEM wheels and it worked great all winter.

I'm sorry but this is false. I have a 2013 PP (red callipers) that came with 18" from factory and they fit perfectly.

Now as for winter setup the dealer or even local tire shop will recommend you go down size in front to 235/40/18 and put those all around DO NOT DO THIS! I had studded nokian Hakkapelitta 8 tires and in that size they were really unstable in the rear. I trusted my tire guy and he messed up (also the fact that since Hakka 7 the nokians have gone down hill).

I suggest you keep the oem 245/255 setup with ever brand you chose.

*** edit I just not noticed this is for the new model C63S my bad I was talking about the w204 C63PP.

My plan is to throw some winter tires on the stock 19"s. Hopefully i'll be able to use my friend's tirerack wholesale account.

i do have the c63s so looks like I'll stick to the 19"s. Ill check out tire rack. I think a wheel/tire package will be nice so the wheels stay nice during the winter. Looks like these Vreidteins are getting some good reviews here on the site. I know blizzak has always been popular

vreds are awesome always had a good experience with them as winters and with their summers. The pirellis scorpion ice and snow also. As for the blizzaks they are popular yes but terrible tires I had a brand new set of LM60 and ripped those off after 1 week for not being able to drive up my slightly inclined driveway in less than 1" of snow. So personally I'd avoid blizzaks on any RWD car from my personal experience. Awd is different but still speaking from purely the tire factor that's my advice.

As I am close to purchasing and live in a part of the country where I need winter tires, I called Tire Rack. As of last week, the ONLY tire they were recommending or willing to sell me was the Pirelli Sottozero. They also did not show any wheel alternatives.

Are there any low cost wheel alternatives?

I had the Pirelli's on my 911 4S; while they were fantastic in the wet, they were only so-so at best in the snow. I am trying to get word about picking up Nokians.

I was looking at Blizzaks as well... Based on some reviews on here, I guess I won't be getting those. Anyone in Canada know a good setup, I think I am going to be running my OEM rims as well as where has decent prices? I'm in London ON

I heard Nokain makes the Hakapelita (sp?) in sizes that work with the car. My tire shop is trying to find out when I could obtain a set as it is somewhat challenging to get the tires over here. I have them on my STI and they are absolutely the best snow tire I have ever used.

I put the Sotozeros on mine here in Reno and while I never drive it in snow much more than a few inches deep, they worked ok. I drove it up to Lake Tahoe one weekend and, yeah, they are not that good but got me there and back. I was able to get a set of track wheels from Tirerack that should also work for mounting snow tires. OZ Leggera HLTs.

When I bought my E63, it came with Sottozeroes. If I were buying winter tires today, I would go with Michelin Pilot Alpins based on reviews I have read. Not sure if they make them in sizes suitable for a C63. Costco is a fantastic place to buy tires.

You should also have a good look at the Nokian Hakka 8s.

What wheels work with this car? When I go to Tire Rack I get a message saying that they have nothing for this particular car.

They make good, strong, quality wheels that are good for the winter. Most likely will need to order them from Canada.

I looked them up and they seem to be studded... We can't run studded tires here as they are illegal. Which I think is BS because of the amount of snow and ice we get there.

There is a non-studded version of the tires. That's what I used last year. They were incredible on my AWD sedan (which I am trading in for the C63S).

Are the stock wheels centerlocks or is that just a cap that mimics the centerlock look?

What is the offset/width for the oem S wheel?

Thanks!

I have the Pirelli SottoZero's and they worked extremely well last winter. I went with a square setup all the way around.

Looking at Kumho WP71 or Blizzak LM-32 debating whether to go

255/35/19 square set up or
235/35/19 front 255/35/19 or
255/35/19 front 275/35/19

Aspect margins are all within 1.1%.

Thoughts?

even with winter wheels/tires, could this car (C63) truly be reliable/driveable in the winter??? I live in the philly suburbs and will have to drive in any icy/snowy conditions mother nature throws at me. my impractical side HOPES the car would be just fine, but my reasonable side says NO WAY and just go with the C43 coupe instead...please convince me otherwise!

While I just picked up my car last week, I think it will depend on the way you adjust your driving style with proper snow tires. Fortunately, the aspect ratios on the stock tire sizes are not too horrible (compared to a 911 I drove) and with judicious use of the throttle should be manageable. In most other situations the snow tires should actually make the car better than cars with all seasons.

Working with my local tire specialist, there do not seem to be that many great tires for this car though. I do not recommend the Pirellis (great in slush, not so good in snow, expensive). I am very tempted to pick up a used 325/330xi for about $3000 off of craigslist and leave the C in the garage....

I am tempted to "treat" myself to the fun/over the top and completely impractical C63 and keep driving the 2008 Audi S4 (which is still a fun car to drive, don't get me wrong) on crappy weather days.
