Secondary Cat delete on C63s Perf Exhaust
#201
Took my C63 to my local exhaust guy for the secondary cat delete and he said he couldn't do it without taking out the downpipes. Said there wasn't enough space to weld. How have other people had this done?

Right, after finding someone to actually do the secondary cat delete, here are my thoughts (I have the non-perf exhaust):
- Zero drone. Non-perf exhaust is as quiet as standard on on the freeway/motorway. Can't hear it.
- A touch louder on idle to normal throttle than stock, but only a touch. On mid to full throttle, however, it's LOUD. This is great for the non-perf exhaust especially because it means driving around normally isn't offensive, but when you start opening the throttle, you can make some ridiculous noises. It's like two cars in one.
- Throatier tone. As standard, I couldn't hear the exhaust through tunnels despite it being pretty loud. With the secondary cats gone, the tone is throatier (not raspier!) and so now through tunnels it sounds amazing. I was shocked how loud it was and how good it sounded, really hard-edged and a lot more like the previous C63.
- Pops and crackles. Before, they sounded like firecrackers. Now they sound like fireworks. Standing behind the car, they punch you in the stomach when they go off. Combined with the engine sound update, this exhaust mod sounds absolutely mental.
In short, it's the perfect mod. Everyone should do it.

Read through the entire thread!
sounds like you guys love the mod, but have trouble finding a good shop to do this for you due to legal scares or skill of cutting/access.
I've tried to have this done on my Mini Paceman S (same second cat), but all local shops "scare" away from the word cat removal.
Anyone in the Atlanta, GA area that can recommend a good shop to do the second cat delete? Pretty much convinced to do this...

Sweet! I'll give them a call to schedule it. If you don't mind me asking, how much did they charge you for it?

I'm on the south-side Dave. I'm really keen to listen to a car with the work already carried out before taking the plunge - might be hard to do up here.
I checked the link Sanch sent through and it's showing Vic as you mention.

I just wouldn't want to pay custom prices for what is a pretty straight forward task

When are you getting yours done Dave - be keen to have a listen before I pull the trigger?

I had this done earlier this week by a local guy. He gutted the inside of the secondary cats rather than replacing them with straight pipes. So it still looks stock underneath. Best £100 I've spent on the c63s. No louder when in comfort but just a touch louder in race when driving hard. How it should have been from Mercedes.

GET THIS MOD!
Ok, so I just had this done. While it isn't a night-n-day difference, as the performance exhaust is pretty audible in race mode as it is, this mod is DEFINITELY worth the money.
- At idle, with the valves open, you can definitely here that V8 lump/gurgle type idle from the interior of the car. Couldn't hear that before. Yes, I could hear the idle before. But that 60s era muscle car lumpy/gurgle aspect of the idle, I definitely couldn't.
- In race mode, the car is lets say...very liberal with fuel. So there's typically a delay between removing your foot from the accelerator and the ECU cutting fuel, which is responsible for the backfires you hear (even when not downshifting; just suddenly releasing the throttle). Before the mod, I had to be on the throttle a good bit to get a loud enough backfire for me to hear it (and enjoy it). Now, it's much more audible. And I love it
- Just driving around town (again, in race mode), the exhaust is definitely more noticeable. And when you're on it, it's a GOOD bit more aggressive. Like not a tiny bit. Substantially.
- When driving aggressively, it REALLY opens up. Louder backfires on lifting, louder backfires on downshifting, louder exhaust in response to aggressive throttle... All around a winner.
Having said that, I'd STILL like my exhaust be louder with the valves open. But YMMV. I am one of those guys who wouldn't mind a GOOD sounding but almost obnoxiously loud exhaust - when I want it (eg valves open).
Also, in another thread: https://mbworld.org/forums/c63-c63s-...-delete-2.html there was a pic showing the inside of the secondary cats, stating "the secondary cats are not that restricted."
I disagree. This is me holding up the secondary cat to pure sunlight. That tiny little white...that's how little light gets through...

I had mine removed and had the software update. It is pretty big difference for me... at least 30% louder.
