The exhaust is two pipes from front to rear, bolted straight onto the turbos like this:

Turbos—>Downpipes (with primary and secondary cats)—>mid pipes (with valved h-pipe connecting them)—>axle back pipes (with non-valved mufflers on non-perf and valved on perf)

To get more noise you can:
1) fit a cat-back exhaust (which joins after the downpipes)
2) fit an axle-back exhaust (which joins after the mid pipe)
3) remove the secondary cats (which involves cutting them from the downpipes)
4) replace all the cats (which involves switching out the downpipes for catless ones)

Pros/Cons of Each
1) Deeper sound, easy to fit, cheaper than downpipes/less raspy than downpipes
2) Deeper sound, really easy to fit, cheapest option and easy to make from scratch (I'm getting them made and fitted to my non-perf for £300)/not as deep as cat-back, less raspy than downpipes
3) More volume and rasp, cheap to have cut out and replaced with straight pipe/involves modifying factory downpipes irreparably
4) Closest sound to non-turbo/costs a lot of money for the pipes and to have them fitted, because the standard downpipes must be cut or the transmission dropped to get them in.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the extensive write up. So the secondary cats are on the downpipes so there is no way to custom fab a easy release system so you can switch out between the straight pipe and the secondary cat?

You could add custom v-band flanges to swap the secondary cats in and out.

Yes. If you want to lose the secondary cats, they have to be cut out. It's possible that your exhaust fabricator could fit flanges to the remaining downpipes, as well as the bits cut out and the new straight pipe going in so you can swap them. It's quite tight in there though.
