Question for those who custom ordered their car.
1. How much deposit you had to put? And is it 100% refundable if you don't want the car later even after it gets here?
2. Did you have to negotiate the sale price of the car before ordering or is that done later after the car arrives?
Thanks!

You should absolutely negotiate price before the order. You should check with several dealers in your area and get them to commit to a percentage off. If they sense you're pitting them against each other they won't give hard numbers.
They don't have any incentive to negotiate price after it arrives and I'd be surprised if they'd order it without negotiating first.

1. As much as you want, put down as little as possible and have them document its refundable as it should be, I did $1000, if they won't refund you, go to a different dealer
2. Negotiate final price pre order including any incentives and trunk money and fleet discounts
trade in is tricky as the value of trade is a moving target

I ordered in November and I pick up the C63S coupe this week.... I also put $1000 down that was refundable, and negotiated a total 4% of msrp at the time. Discount varies by model and region; you will find better discounts on 43s and sedans over the 63s coupe Any incentives and finance lease rates is based on the time of signing the final deal and when the car is delivered. I signed a few days early so I could get the March incentives, which was first 3 payments waived, and an extra $1000 off. I also received a 1% finance rate reduction.

I put $2000 deposit. The dealer told me it is 100% refundable until the car is actually in production.
Also, you absolutely negotiate the price before giving the deposit. And importantly GET THE BILL IN WRITING. Make sure it shows the discount that was negotiated on it. Many salespeople/dealerships can be sleazy and will play tricks like give you and extra 1-2% off MSRP but then tack on some higher fees elsewhere.
If you are negotiating for a next year car (around July/August) they may not know the MSRP yet. In that case, make sure you get the % discount in writing.

Ordering car
1) I put $0 down
2) When car was delivered negotiated price. This was my first MB purchase and the first from MB of Silver Spring MD. It really was a stress free process.

I put $3k down. I didn't ask if it's refundable. To me, the idea of a fully refundable deposit is an oxymoron as it (at least partially) negates the purpose of the deposit.

Been covered pretty good already:
-put as little deposit down as possible
-negotiate all pricing up front
-make sure you take advantage of any applicable monthly promotions, but remember, you can only take advantage of promo when closing the deal, not when placing order
-something not mentioned, when ordering , make sure you get all details up front, they actually have allocations/allocations coming, where you are on that list, how many they got prior model year, etc.....reason for this, if they got 3 allocations for 2017, and you are 5th on the list for 2018, you probably aren't getting one and now you just wasted your time.
-one thing of note nobody has mentioned. If you are ordering a rare color combo (hard to sell/ugly), or a bunch of more rare options, expect them to NOT refund your deposit if you walk, and maybe even have you sign something commuting to the order. Just think of it logically from that point, they don't want a Frankenstein car combo they are responsible for if you walk.

I put $5K because they were making a deal with another Dealership to take one of their build slots. I did not really get into the refundable as it was not a real consideration for me.

$2k. Agreed on price at time of deposit. 100% refundable in California up to new owner takes delivery.

I put down $1000 and the dealer knocked off $2500, which I got in writing. The deposit was refundable and I had them write that on the same sheet as the price discount. I've been screwed before and was upfront about having all answers to my questions written down.
