Newbie snow wheel/tire question

New England can get a lot of snow. Not like Buffalo, but we do have days where it’s easy to misplace small pets, your wife, the mailbox, the mailman, your car or your house.

As you may have seen in my overly long “introductory” thread, I’ve owned a lot of cars in the last 15 years (and the previous 12 years or so were just as bad.) But never once have I bought a snow tire. Lately I’ve either had AWD cars with all season tires, or my Camaro SS which struggles to gain traction on dry roads, nevermind snow, so we just don’t go anywhere in that beast in the winter.

But now I’ve put a deposit on a C63s. I will give the salesman props for honesty. When I said, “I should be okay with this being RWD as long as I have snow tires.” He raised his right eyebrow and slow started to shake his head side to side, in the same manner you might do if a good friend insisted he could the knife in the electrical socket and be fine.

But, I have little choice. I’m going to go for it.

I know there have been threads on snow tires here, I’ve read them, but I tend to come up with the same question.

What I really want is a winter-only set of rims with good snow tires on them.

When I go to Tire Rack, for instance, the only tires they sell for my (our) car are the Pirelli Winter Sottozero Series II. Those come in sizes that would fit the stock rims.

Do you guys typically change the tires and use the same rims each season, or just have a dedicated set of wheels and tires for winter? If I get a dedicated set, I would assume I could find a reasonably priced squared set of wheels that would fit some nice Blizzaks? I read somewhere they need to be 19” to fit around the brake caliper. Anyone doing something like that? I really don’t need a low profile high performance winter tire. I just want a GOOD winter tire and some somewhat inexpensive squared rims to put them on.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Evan

You will definitely need better tires. The Michelin PS2s are horrible below 50 degrees. i have the Sottozeros and while they are not great in the snow, they will keep you out of trouble.

I put a deposit on a set of snow tires and wheels. Changing the tires on and off your rims each season will damage them, and it costs more labour each time (which you can't get back). You might as well buy a set of snow tires and wheels, which you can sell for some solid money later.

Your overall cost of ownership will be the same, but there will be much less hassle.

You'll be fine with performance snow tires, as long as you know how to drive OK. I drove 2 different M3's for a total of 9-winter seasons in Toronto, Canada with snow tires and it was fine. Definitely not as good as my wife's car with 4matic and proper snow tires (vs RWD and "performance snow tires"), but good enough to get where you need to go.

It's actually easier to drive with traction control in sport or totally off. Sometimes you need the wheels to slip to get where you need to go. If you're not comfortable doing that, you may want to consider an alternative form of transportation in the winter.
