Race Mode Gear Change

To be completely honest, I spend a lot more time in Sport + than I do Race Mode. But every now and then I get froggy and play around a bit. Quite frequently, if I'm slowing down for a turn in 3rd, then hit my paddle to shift down to 2nd, it will skip a gear and put me in 1st. It's on M so I don't see why it would do that, even if the ECU thinks I should be in 1st. It causes me to redline and obviously messes with my throttle because I am thinking I should be in 2nd. I haven't played around enough to see if it does this in other gears. Anybody else have this problem? Is it just the ECU overriding me because it's smarter than me, or is it something I should have looked at? I can understand the ECU overriding M in extreme circumstances to self protect, but this definitely isn't one of those scenarios.

On mine the transmission automatically downshifts when I slow down. Maybe it has made up it's mind to downshift and then beats you to it.

That could be it. Maybe it's downshifting automatically to 2nd right as I hit the paddle so I'm actually putting it into 1st?

That would be my guess. I recall this happening to me a few times before I caught on. I always wondered why Race Mode downshifts in auto, but upshifts are in manual mode. I am one of those who will probably never track the car.

The only weird thing is that I wasn't close to idle, so I don't know why it would kick down to 2nd. I was still around 3k rpms when I hit the downshift. I don't believe the ECU should take over in M unless youre about to blow the engine or stall

There are a collection of "rules" that govern shifting -- for a summary, see

Race mode is programmed to drop to the lowest available gear for max performance under braking, on a track if you're slowing down for the next turn/apex you'll want to be in the lowest gear for max power/tq, so that's what the car is thinking.
I rarely drive in Race Mode, bc I hate the trans holding gears till redline. S+ always.

Another possibility is that you held the paddle long enough to cause it to downshift two gears instead of one?

Now that makes sense.

That's probably it. I rarely drive in Race Mode so I was just making sure it wasn't a transmission issue. It must be downshifting right as I'm about to hence why when I hit it I go down 2 gears. Thanks for the info everyone
