Oops! As the driving instructor at the AMG Driving Academy would say, "Hands too slow for that much throttle". Lesson here, don't turn off ESP unless you've had hours of drifting practice and there is enough run off in case things go wrong. ESP Sport Handling mode allows for plenty of drifting w/ a safety net and in the 2019 one can turn off ESP, but leave a good level of TC on to avoid this kind of outcome. Level 3-6 allows for some nice drifting w/o ending up like this, either way, though if you wanna drift your C63 participate in some drift classes first.

Or rather ease off the throttle if you feel it's rotating too much, but yes never let off abruptly. Worst case you are doing a 360 around the car's axle and dissipate all the energy instead of going off the road. That's kinda lesson number 1 with RWD, easy and smooth inputs will safe the day, but if the ***** were bigger than one's skills, the great feature on these cars is that the moment you step on the brakes, ESP will fully reactivate and help stabilize the car. He would have had it if he stepped on the brakes the moment he was going the other way instead of stepping on the brakes only when he was almost in the tree.

And to add insult to injury, the police arrived minutes later in an Audi.

There just seems to be a never ending supply of idiots willing to show off their lack of skill at these events. I've watched enough now to know I don't want to be that guy and not try to impress with skills I don't have. It really can only end one way!

Don't be that guy.

It's called 'off-throttle oversteer'. Looking at the footage, I wonder out loud if he possibly bent the frame.

Yeah, this has been all over social media the last 2 days.

I'd be surprised if that isn't a total loss.

You probably aren't aware of this - but the pre-facelift version would drift in Sport+ mode without hardly any effort with the original PSS tires. In fact, you would have to have had special training to learn to NOT drift that car. I solved that problem by getting different tires.

Yes, but ESP was still there watching your moves and if it detected that you were going in a different direction than intended it would intervene. Most ESPs in sport cars allow a freedom of drift as long as they see the driver countersteer correctly to keep the car going in the general intended direction. I could even drift my RS5 with ESP full on in slow corners as long as I maintained control. The moment it was going out of control for example when the car started to go into a 4-wheel drift the ESP would intervene, but in ESP Sport it even allowed a controlled 4-wheel drift. The FL C63 does seem to cut in sooner with ESP on in S+ and you have to put it in Sport Handling mode to allow for controlled drifts. The most aggressive chassis dynamics (Master mode) can only be unlocked with ESP in sport handling or off. Not necessarily a bad thing.

With the facelift, I have drifted a little (3-5 ft sideways) when making hard left turns while going hard on the gas pedal, just at the entry point of the freeway ramps. I have left my car in Individual mode identical to Sport+, except for the suspension set to COMFORT.

Yes, the car does allow/tolerate some amount of slip but ESP kicks in if it's not a controlled amount of drift.

Also, there are noticeable differences between the sedan and the coupe. The sedan has less grip in the rear. Skinner tires, narrower track and standard C-Class rear axle assembly. The coupe has more rubber, wider track and a unique rear axle, so it takes more to brake it loose and it also hooks up quicker and better when you need the traction.

Why does every nail the gas in a turn?? You see it in every video.

Otherwise everyone is bashing on him and saying what they would have done but anybody who has owned performance car knows they have had an o **** moment and for this guy it didn't work out. People don't get the amount of HP you can buy these days. 11 sec cars used to be all out race cars now its off the showroom easily. Make sure its pointed straight before you hit the big pedal.

Because drifting is fun? It's a worthy skill and the AMG Driving Academy even offers a one day drift program.
