Are all AMG bi-turbo 4.0L engines created equal?

Does the long block of the 503 HP C63S have the same components as the bi-turbo 4.0L in the 550 HP AMG GTC or even the AMG GTR? Does Mercedes just de-tune this engine depending on what platform they put it in?

From what I read, not much hp more but the short block are built with higher end materials.

No, it doesn't. The various power levels have different turbos. Our variant has single scroll turbos and the higher output variants have twin scroll and larger turbos. Also specifically for the GT, the GT variants have a dry sump oil system to lower the center of gravity and keep the engine lubricated properly during high cornering forces. The base is the same, but the higher power levels are essentially achieved with different turbos and ECU tuning.

Boost pressure is also different among some of the variants. In addition a dry sump reduces crank drag somewhat which allows the engine to rev more free and faster.

That's good enough for me to tell myself it's the same engine. Hell, I tell myself my car has the same engine as the Aston Martin Vantage at about half the price!

I've just been reading that the C63 is putting out 9.5psi of boost? So the S is what, 11psi?

Surely a tune is a pretty safe bet on these cars?

On the subject of tuning. That vid on the of home page, Sandra's car was pushing 624hp, yet Litchfield only get 570, or 590 with the Akrapovich exhaust.... I'm thinking it's a bit of a minefield out there..

I also read where compression values are different and different alloy in piston heads for example in the E63. Engines with higher output have stronger parts.

that would be sad. Besides, the C63S has more torque than the Vantage and DB11 V8

You are correct. I forgot about that. Each variant has different pistons. They showed us that during the factory tour. Each engine starts with the same block, but gets different pistons, turbos etc.

Compression ratios are definitely different between the E63S and C63S.

The E63S is listed at 8.6:1 and gets larger twin scroll turbos

The C63S is listed at 10.5:1 and has smaller single scroll turbos
