I bought a freaking car today...

Just to keep from racking up miles on my C63.

I drive almost 70 miles a day, five days a week, just commuting and the roads here suck so I’m hating using my car for daily commuting. I’ve put 6,000 miles on my car in just four months and anticipating maintenance costs and depreciation I can almost justify a 36 month lease on a commuter.

My beloved C63 Cabriolet is going to be a garage queen.

Sad. Just sell the C63 to some middle aged man who will drive it with the top down on the weekend wearing goggles and gloves. Oh, wait. Is that you?

If you take a look at used C63's, the biggest driving value (no pun intended) of depreciation is age, not miles.

While 18K mi/yr is on the higher side, it's not going to really budge the needle much on the depreciation of this car. It will sit in the garage with the value continuing to slide down the depreciation curve.

Who did you buy this car for? Yourself or the next owner? I've had this kind of thinking before - always being concerned about value/mileage, but I've realized it really takes away from the ownership experience. I bought my car to enjoy it and to use it and I'm going to do exactly that

A better setup for the garage queen strategy would be if you had a limited edition supercar. You would actually probably come out of that losing less money as that type of car actually holds value.

Gonna have to agree with @Xec. Did you buy the car to look at or to drive? I know there are people who collect cars, and rarely drive them, but those are typically exotics that are bought as an investment. Whether you drive a C63 or not, it'll depreciate mostly because of its age as said. Yes, maintenance will add up and you'll quickly go through the warranty period driving this much, but life is too short to worry about the small stuff. I'd be more concerned about commuting 70 miles a day in general. That's a lot of wasted time. I've given up commuting about 10 years ago. Never really had a car commute before then either. Always lived close to where I worked, so I could take public transportation.

sad. i love this car and really enjoy it. at the end of the day, it’s a c class. there is no reason this car should be a garage queen and absolutely no reason you should care about the depreciation. this car isn’t a collectors item nor is it a super car. your money; your decision but this car is going to deteriorate sitting in a garage not being driven.

Agree with all said.

At the end of the day this is a tuned c class. If you consider it a supercar this is not for you.

Just get rid of it and buy yourself something more suitable

I strongly promote maximum usage at every given opportunity instead of saving the car for the next owner who clearly wont be able to provide any form of acceptable return. A total no brainer. Drive, drive and drive.

I think this thread goes off topic...I also bought mine as daily driver and to enjoy it and driving 70 miles in a clunker to save my C63S does not sound too enticing to me, but its everyone's own decision. For the OP this might be his supercar and he wants to keep it for a very long time. also, I am in FL and cant compare to the beating a car in the rustbelt states gets during winter time. So, maybe that is the best decision the OP feels comfy with - why not.

To the OP: just make sure you do drive it regularly and not just have it sitting in the garage...I do the same mistake with my boat and I pay dearly every time.

I don’t see anything wrong with what OP is doing. I used to commute in nyc for so many years and most of the time I’m in bumper to bumper traffic with people trying to cut me off left and right. People park their cars like A-holes and side-swipe my car (clk500 in 2004) all the time. I got frustrated and got another car back as a daily. I get why OP wants another daily to go to work. Also save a little gas money while you’re at it but not the main reason, because sitting in traffic is a waste of gas.

I get it also. Daily driving sitting through traffic is just boring miles. Lots of wear and tear and not much enjoyment in bumper to bumper traffic.

That's certainly true and why I equipped mine with all the driver assistance features. Even though I generally don't drive when the roads are congested, I much rather find myself in traffic in my 63 and be able to engage DISTRONIC and auto steering and just be a passenger for a bit. So much more relaxing. The enjoyment of the car comes in the form of not being as frustrating while stuck in traffic. I guess it depends on what car OP bought as a commuter car. To be honest, if I had a commute, I would highly consider a Tesla (AutoPilot) or other EV as a commuter car simply for the benefit of being able to use the HOV lanes.

I agree. I only drive into the office twice a week. If I had a 5 day somewhat long commute then I would buy an EV for daily duties.

I can understand where the OP is coming from. There’s a difference between driving for leisure, which I do as often as time allows, and driving in a bumper to bumper commute. For the latter, my wife and I carpool in our GTI. Economical, agile, and most importantly easy to navigate and park downtown.

My daily commute is also 70 miles and I bought a certified Sonata as a beater from day 1. Best decision ever. Low maintenance cost, better in snow with winter tires and nice to have a low key car at work.

I feel OP is doing the right thing here by not getting stuck in traffic with the C63 when you just be enjoying the drive. Also Carpool lane privileges for EVs are going to shrink (and have already started for a lot of vehicles purchased a few years ago I believe) in the next few years as the number of EVs on the road increase.

I think the better thing to do would be to either stay close to work to keep your commute time less or switch to an alternate means of transport that doesn't require you to drive. My employer provides free shuttle service for my 18-mile commute each way, and I utilize it during the weekdays. In the weekends and during the evenings, I get to utilize my C63S for more fun and spirited drives.

We have a second car which we use when needed as well, for example visiting the city where the roads are bad, requires street parking, etc.

I agree it is not a super car, but I am all about taking good care of my car along with the fun driving.

Whoa! I am afraid to even comment here...some very strong opinions!

BUT I guess that is what these forums are for...too each their own and I say if the OP wants to preserve his gorgeous AMG...Go For It!!!

I recently bought a second car too mainly for daily commute...three main reasons as follows:

1) My commute is all interstate which is under heavy construction for at least the next 2-3 years per ADOT (already had to replace my windshield from a huge rock)

2) I am in the process of planning a build for my AMG as I enjoy 1/2 mile racing to include possibly a 100 octane tune...not something I want to drive everyday to work

3) Plan for my AMG is to take it out almost every weekend and enjoy it at Cars & Coffee events, etc...and 3-4 times a year go 1/2 mile racing.

Blast away but this is my plan...and I am sticking to it...LOL
