Would say do it for the sound more than the power especially on a stock tune. Installed ZAC motorsports intakes last week and the turbo spool sound you get is amazing. Fully enclosed systems will not give you this. Since they have no spot for BOV recirculation hoses you also get blow off sound. I'm getting their VTA bypass to refine the bov sound next.

BMS intake system can't be beat for the price, quality, and proven dyno gains.

i had many cars with aftermarket intakes but I don’t get the C63 intakes which are internally open like BMS and ZAC and next to the turbos. They use the same plastic air rams from underneath the hood but then keep them wide open and blow the “cold” are from the front inside the engine bay without restricting or channeling it to the air intake filters. Instead the larger filters see now air from the hot surrounding engine all the time. So isn’t that counterproductive to having larger intake pipes if the intake air is significant hotter? Most performance cars I had take the intake even further up front under the bumper ..more air and colder air.

The engine may adapt to the extra air it's getting, but not by much. It's more for the sound effects. However, on a Porsche Macan, it uses a ram-air hood. But there were multiple restrictions. So, I cut out a cross section on the filter housing as well as the underside of the hood. Now it's wide open.

With the hood closed, everything seals up so there's no bleed over from heat.

You are brave - cutting your hood.

To the OP - you can also consider some of the sealed aftermarket intake options: Weistec and Gruppe M come to my mind. I have the latter and it supposedly lets more air into the sealed filter box as the air rams are larger and grab air from further down on the front bumber. Both come paired with high flow air filters.

It was a small piece across the center of the openings... No structural integrity breached.

To the OP, not sure where you live in the U.S. In Houston it gets reallt hot in the summer. Hot enough for the roads to buckle from the heat. If I were to upgrade the intake, I'd try to find a good 'closed' system and not filters open to the engine compartment. Heat soak. HIgh temps. Engine bogging.
