Fault Code P002477 - 2017 C63S

Hi everyone, I tried to search on the forum to see if this had been answered before ...
I am seeking to purchase a second-hand C63S AMG Saloon, its my dream car. I found a good 2017 example with low mileage (12,000 miles or 20,000kms), from a private dealer, who told me that the first owner of the car neglected to service the car before selling it to the dealer. As a result, the car is overdue for its A service by about 7 months.

I had a pre-purchase inspection done on the car which came back totally clean except for one thing - the car idles a little irregularly (the mechanic told me it was very minor). He said he found a stored fault code P002477 (pic attached). From my Googling, it seems that this could have been caused by the failure to service the car on time for its last annual service and there may be old / dirty oil in the engine : "The oil is too thick, causing the passages to become clogged due to lack of oil flow to or from the camshaft phasers that control the timing."

I was just wondering if anyone else had seen this before and could shed any light on it - is it a serious problem or one that can be fixed by servicing the car? I'd be able to get the car for a pretty decent price and the rest of it is in pretty good nick.

Thanks in advance!

That's an inexpensive fix. One of the cheaper ones actually, should be under 300. I would be more concerned if the original owner has had it tuned at some point. You don't want to buy a vehicle that has potential to be flagged. My car is tuned and I try every other option before having to take it to the dealer. I had to pay out of pocket for small minor repairs because I'm afraid of being flagged even though I'm cool with the SA and Mechanic at my dealer.

Thank you TeraPatrick - may I ask, how would they fix it? I don't think it has been tuned - the car has been left in a garage for some time as the owner went overseas to live and left it behind (madness), but I am taking it to a Mercedes-Benz specialist garage tomorrow just to be sure and check, the car is still under warranty at the official Mercedes distributor for another 18 months, however I suspect the warranty might be voided because it has not been serviced on time - if this is the only problem with the car and it otherwise has a clean bill of health I hope it will be a good buy!

It's an awesome car. I'm not a mechanic myself, but he's dealt with same code on my friends car and it was around $300. I understand the original owner was overseas hence not servicing the car. But does the mileage of the car (since its not driven) match the mileage on the expected service date mileage?

Yes I think so ... the Mercedes dealer gave me the history - serviced October 2017 at 7,000kms, then October 2018 at 12,400 kms, and was supposed to be serviced at October 2019 but missed it’s service. It last came to the shop to fix a paint scratch on its rear bumper in July 2019, when it was recorded with 17,000kms on the odometer. Car was sold by previous owner in February of this year to the current dealer with 20,370 km on the clock (20,382 now). It seems legit to me (I think?) I’ve had it inspected and they said the odometer was fine, but I’m sending it for inspection tomorrow with a Mercedes specialist to check out the code! Hopefully they’ll be able to tell me whether it’s ok to buy!

Best to wait for the big boys to run their diagnostics and see if she's worth it. If all is good, this car will put a smile on your face every time you turn it on.
