Hi Everyone,

I hope everyone is keeping safe during the COVID-19 pandemic! So I recently took delivery of a 2020 C63s Coupe with the carbon-ceramic brakes, and I just came back from my first track day. Prior to my first few laps, the brakes had a very strong initial bite to them, I'd only need to press down 10-20% to get the car to a complete stop. The rotors were also spotless, they had a very shiny, reflective finish to them. After 3-4 laps, I noticed that the brakes had lost their initial bite, and I had to press down quite far to get the car to stop prior to hitting the corners. I also noticed that the rotors had some lines on them, I've attached a photo for reference. Is this normal? I am new to tracking my vehicle, am I braking incorrectly?

Maybe you should have read up a little on ceramic brakes. The rotors look rough. Shame if you need to replace them ($$$). While I'm thinking about it, you probably boiled your brake fluid. That would impact your stopping capability also.

That’s very strange, I’ve only got 2500kms on the dash, any idea what could have caused this on the rotor?

These brakes run all day every day at the AMG driving Academy events. I've done multiple back to back day sessions in the Austin Texas heat and there is zero fade. My guess is you are running the wrong brake fluid

That looks like your rotors are just glazed over. This happens when the brakes are improperly bedded in. No need to replace any parts.

What you'll want to do is find a straight, secluded road with no traffic. You'll want to speed up to 60-70 mph and slam hard on the brakes, preferrably threshold braking just prior to activating ABS, all the way to where you almost stop but don't. Then speed back up and repeat this process several times one after another, all without coming to a complete stop. Once you've done this, you then want to drive at a constant highway-type speed without touching the brakes to cool everything off.

What you are doing is bringing the brakes up to higher temperatures to loosen/remove the glazed brake pad material from your rotors and then apply an even, fresh layer of pad material onto the rotors. The reason for never coming to a complete stop is to maintain an even pad material (stopping with the brakes applied would make the spot on the rotor where the caliper is stopped on to become uneven).

That’s great advice, thank you very much for that! Definitely a huge relief hearing that the rotors are fine. I’m currently running the stock brake fluid, should I replace this for a higher performing brake fluid to minimize sponginess?

If you track the car, absolutely change the fluid.

Is there any specific brand / type of fluid you would recommend for track and road use? I plan to track the car 4-5 times every summer, and then continue to daily it throughout the rest of the year.

. I had about only 6,000 miles on my 2019 C63s coupe and owned only about 6 months, always garaged and rear rotors hat and lines around rotors developed rust.
. I brought to MB Dealership where Service Manager took a look and simply replaced both rear rotors under warranty. There 2 hours and left happy. Just another option for you to consider with so little mileage.
