Drive unit question

I'm asking this in the C63 forum since most C43s don't have it. I ordered my car with the AMG drive unit, but unfortunately they didn't include it. However, when I picked up my car the dials were on the steering wheel but not powered. I'm very curious if anyone knows how they are supposed to be wired. I'd like to see if maybe they just didn't connect them and there's a way to get them to work.
thanks!

Have you taken this up with the dealer? Should be a super easy warranty fix.

Not sure it's that easy. The vin shows that it isn't included even though it was ordered with the option, but it was built with the dials on the steering wheel but not working.
I didn't pay for it once we found the invoice didn't show the option being included. Not sure it would be a warranty issue. I am working with the dealer but right now they don't seem to have a clue. I even told them I'd be willing to pay for the option of they can get it working.

It's possible it could just be a coding issue. There are 2 people who can help:
1. https://www.rjautomotive.net/
2. https://www.facebook.com/elebestpteltd/

I would send an email to RJ first to see if he might be able to remote code your vehicle to get it operational. EleBest may be more expensive and may not offer services outside of Singapore.

I seriously wonder how this car left the factory like this and I would wonder what else isn't right. Somebody in QC was clearly deep asleep on this one. I'm not entirely sure how the AMG Drive Unit is wired, but I thought it's a different wiring harness and the module that controls the drive mode buttons in the center console is different with an extra connection for the AMG Drive Unit. So the retrofit I believe involves swapping the module and potentially install a different harness. It could also be a separate module, because they had a software bug where if the drive modes were changed via the AMG Drive Unit, the dynamic engine mounts in the 63S models would make a noise and not work properly. My car had this issue, and there was a service campaign to update the AMG Drive Unit software. So it seems it's more like a separate subsystem. I suppose you have two options. 1) get the dealership to swap your steering wheel to one w/o the controls or 2) figure out what's actually there and what's not to see if you can work with one of the outfits above and do a partial retrofit to get it working. You might wanna take this up with MB as well and get an AMG engineer involved. I probably would have refused delivery of this car until the dealership had corrected the mistake or ordered a new car.

I agree with what you're saying and they were going to order me another C43 but they stopped taking any orders on the 2021 C43 about 2 months ago when I identified the issue with the VIN. They even tried putting in an update to an existing order but it wouldn't take. I agree it's strange this got by QA but so far the car has been great even though I only have 300 miles on it. I've tried every feature possible and everything seems to be working. Also when I picked up the car I had no idea the drive unit wasn't working as I thought they accidentally built it with them, wishful thinking I guess. When I drove it off the showroom it wasn't till I looked down at them that I realized they weren't active.
thanks for the contacts above. I'm going to try and work thorough the dealer to resolve this, if all else fails I'll reach out to them.

Should be able to access the internal of the steering wheel once you remove the air bag very easy process can be found on YouTube. That is very odd that it left the factory like that & it would be even worse if that was they intentionally left them to be non-working/dummy buttons if they were going to put them in but did not because you did not pay for them in your build. Keep us updated. I know if you do not opt for it they do not have OEM drive units you can install after the fact you would need to cut wholes into the steering wheel or by a steering wheel with the digital dials. I have a 2021 C63s sedan coming in a few weeks drive unit was one of my top needed features they are so cool!! They are a must have with any modern AMG

I have almost the opposite problem with my 2020 GLC63. I ordered the car with the AMG Drive Unit, and verified the purchase order on NetStar. However, the car was delivered without the Drive Unit and it was not on the invoice. The dealer was helpful but ultimately advised me to open a case with MBUSA. I am aware of a G63 owner who elected to install the Drive Unit after delivery. There is a documented MB service procedure to add the Drive Unit. I believe that the changes are replacing parts of the steering wheel and software updates only.

Interesting. So if the buttons are on the wheel it should be pretty easy to get working. Anyway, I spoke with the dealer and their senior AMG tech said he's seen this before because of covid. MB was on parts constraint do apparently some shipped out with them on the wheel but are clearly missing something. He's going to look into it more and said he may be able to get it working. I'm going to try to stop by tomorrow to talk to him.

Yeah, I'd take it to the dealer and have them figure this out. Was the car built in Alabama or Africa?

It was built in South Africa. I just spoke to the lead AMG tech at the dealer earlier today. He said the first car that came in had the steering wheel controls and they registered when doing a tech check but they didn't do anything and didn't light up. Basically he's saying there's some parts restraints and he's not sure what if anything is missing. He is hoping they'll send out some sort of an update soon to fill them in on what to do. He does think that this should hopefully be a simple fix. I'm going to follow up with them in a month to find out where this stands.

So it's been a few months, but after contacting MB corporate they actually worked with the dealer to resolve the issue. I have to say this actually impressed me. Dropped the car off today and picked it up working. Best part is I basically got this for free since they took it off the price of the car when I picked it up.
