ceramic coating for heat reduction..

Hi all, I have just received my DP's as getting ready for my stage 3 upgrade. Quick question and feedback appreciated, my downspipes came with heat shielding wrapped on them but was wondering if it would be worth going the next step and removing the shield and getting them ceramic coated? I've heard great things about getting exhaust and turbos. There are many reasons for coating your exhaust, the main one being heat management. Ceramic coating provides a thermal barrier protection which will protect your surrounding parts in your engine bay and prolong the working life of the exhaust system. The thermal barrier will also isolate the heat keeping it in the exhaust manifold, this will increase the exhaust gas velocity and reduce back pressure.

But, will it do any more than the heat shielding already wrapped around them? Just wondering if it's worth it? The cost isn't huge, $330 AUD for the pair. I was also thinking of getting the turbo done too.

any suggestions or feedback appreciated...

Just an educated guess: wrap or coating will improve the DP’s performance impact...but the difference at best is a small percent of the overall impact of DP’s, which is already a small percent of total power..So, my guess you want notice a difference between a coating and the wrap.

Quality ceramic coatings work really well, and I prefer it over wrapping. Wrapping holds moisture and can cause the pipes to corrode, stainless or not.

The downsides to coatings and wraps is they don't last forever. Coatings will flake off over time and wraps get brittle and powdery.

You can do both to minimize underhood temps, but it will most likely come at a cost of something cracking at a weld given enough time. The extra retained heat is hard on things.

they are already heat shield wrapped as I mentioned so wondering if better to remove and ceramic coat? Is it worth it?

So I discussed with the premier powerdercoating and ceramic coating shop in Tampa pros and cons of ceraming coating the inside and outside of the exhaust. They said the outside provided a lot more thermal efficiency than the inside. But if I wanted to decrease heat transfer even more efficiently than ceramic coating the interior & exterior, their suggestion was to ceramic coat the exterior twice. Plus it saves time & money, since there's no additional prep time. Just some time to allow the first ceramic coat to cure, and they'd coat it a second time. So that's what I went with. Being that you can't see these pipes when installed (unless on a lift), I opted for the best thermal coating irrespective of appearance. So I went with a "bare" looking black.

perfect feedback and exactly what I wanted to hear!!! 2 costs sounds like a good idea... any option of keeping temps down in the M177 engine bay I gladly welcome... BTW: how much was each coat for the pair and total for 2 coats on pair?

Glad I could help

As for the price, it was 2 posts down from that one in the original thread haha

"Coating is $25/foot, and at 6 feet, that's $150. Second coating was half price ($75). So $225 + tax."
