Rear end whine

I have a 2018 C63 Coupe on 18 inch wheels and MPSS tyres. I have what the MB dealership and an Independent say is a high pitched whine from the rear of the vehicle - personally I think it sounds more like SONAR. MB dealer says some C63’s make this noise and others don’t. They tell me that they and MB do not know the cause of the sound but as they have checked the vehicle they say it is not a safety issue and basically tough I have to live with it. The sound can be heard almost immediately the car moves both from the inside and outside (when walking alongside). It occurs in forward and reverse but not when it is on a ramp only on the road. The Independent thinks it emanates from the right rear and not the differential as he says the noise is less when going round a roundabout (UK) and might be a wheel bearing moving in its housing.

If MB dealer is being truthful then there should be other owners who have experienced this. I also find it hard to believe that MB HQ are unaware of this problem if it is known to affect nany C63’s.

Any thoughts would be gratefully received.

Jonathan

Absolutely not normal. Sounds like a driveshaft to me.

I recall years ago a Youtuber by the name of Autovlog had similar issues and it turned out that the MB dealership put in the wrong rear diff oil (or the trans oil) one of the two and it cause this whining sound. The dealership recognized the mistake and replaced his whole diff/and or trans ( I can't remember ). I hope that is not what happened to you.

Rear end whine

Thank you both for your thoughts.

Driveshaft:
My mechanical knowledge is limited but I assume you mean the driveshaft between the differentail and the offside wheel. Is it possible for my independent dealer to check this without major expense?

Oil:
I have looked back at my invoices and the oil used is Viscosity 75W-140 and Oil Quality 235.61 which is correct according to my internet searches.

Many thanks, Jonathan

I understand you mentioned that the sound happens the moment the vehicle is in motion but does the frequency of the sound, the loudness of the sound change depending on the speed of the vehicle, the threshold the gas pedal is pushed, does it too change when turning, when braking, when coasting, when on certain roads, when the car is cold/warm/hot, high/low humidity weather, high/low outside temperature?
We were talking about a whining issue a few days ago (although your car have a different whine, it too were coming from the rear end)

C63 Rear end whine

From my experience, upon which I would not rely too much, as I am somewhat hard of hearing, the sound is there all of the time regardless of road, speed, temperature etc.but is muffled as road speed increases due tyre and wind roar.

The mechanic from the Mercedes dealership from whom I purchased the car new said that not only could he not link any variability in the noise to roads, temperature etc but he thought the frequency of the noise was constant whatever the speed (a constant sonar like frequency). The only variable was load - on the ramp he was unable to replicate the sound but on the road and even in the dealership forecourt it was clearly evident and he noted it in some of the W205 C63’s but not others that he serviced.

The Mercedes Independent thought differently. He noted the sound but thought it more like a high pitched whine, increasing with speed, coming from the offside rear and less when cornering right.

Many thanks, Jonathan

I see. If he noticed the sound changes (as in audible and inaudible as you described it) depending on load, tell him to put the vehicle in dyno mode through the workshop menu and then put the car on the hoist to listen.

I am going to try and post a video from my iPhone. The video is 2 mins and 23 seconds and the whine should be audible from 1 min 53 seconds. The first part of the video captures a squeaking seat belt buckle.

Many thanks

Watched your video. That's the same issue that this guy had and it was failure of the Bilstein DampTronic module and he fixed it https://mbworld.org/forums/c63-c63s-...se-mad-me.html

Starts from the moment the car moves but becomes muffled as speed increases by road and other noises but is still evident. One mechanic thinks it is speed related but another thinks not. Only noticeable under l9ad and not when on the ramp.
