Base 911 (991.2) vs C63s
Hey guys, making a decision between keeping my C63S (2020 model) or getting into a base 991.2 carrera. Very well-optioned carrera (25k options and lots of goodies + certified). My C63S is also well-optioned - 89k sticker. It's basically even when you figure out gas and insurance savings with the 911 - I'll be selling the C63S for roughly what I paid for it.
Don't know if I should make this jump.
Very conflicted here. Love my C63S but a 911 has always been my dream-car - just don't know if the base is my dream-car.
Most of my driving is highway as I live in Texas.
Worried about losing the luxury features, performance seats, sound and power of my C63S. But have always wanted a 911 and it sure is beautiful.
Has anyone else thought about this or made this decision?
(also - the S is out of the picture affordability wise as good conditioned, optioned Carrera S are going for 120k+)

To be honest, I wouldn't make that move. The GTS is pretty much the sweet spot of the 911 range, so I wouldn't go below that and for me things like Sport Chrono, PASM, PTV and PDCC would be a must. The latter I believe are not available on the base Carrera. With everything being a-la-carte with Porsche, well optioned doesn't say much. Also, for mostly highway driving, not sure you get much out of a Porsche over a C63. I'd argue the C63 is a far better GT (especially the FL), whereas the 911 is better handling, but the C63 is nothing to be embarrassed about on a fun canyon road, especially the coupe. Just went on a 250 mile canyon run on Saturday to remind me why I bought this car. Pleasant and relaxing to cruise out to the canyons on the highway with DISTRONIC and Active Steering engaged, and then put it in Race mode in the canyons and let the show start, then afterwards back in Comfort and chillax on the way home letting DISTRONIC and Active Steering do much of the mundane driving.

Well, i would LOVE a GTS - the issue is that anything 2017 and on is going for over NEW STICKER, with 10-30k miles on them.
I can find a great base carrera with SC, PSE, PASM (standard), nice rims, bose, memory seats, lane change, etc for 95-105k.
But GTS' are insane right now

In June, I actually traded a 2017 991.2 base for my 2021 C63s. I could not pass up the trade in offer for the 911 given the current pricing situation and had never owned an AMG after having multiple BMW M3s, M4 and M5.
Things I do miss: The 911 is insanely agile and steering is spot on, which I do miss given the somewhat vague steering and weight of the C63s. The touchscreen PCM interface was much easier to navigate for me. And the PDK transmission was phenomenal and would hold gears longer in Sport+, which I really liked vs our 9G MCT.
Areas I think the AMG shine are: Much easier for my 52 year old body to get in and out…more comfortable overall. Interior design is superior esthetics-wise. Performance seats are great. Technology feels superior to the 991.2 (Distronic, AMG Dynamics). Engine/Exhaust sound is intoxicating, even on the FL model vs. base 991.2. Acceleration feels more brutal from standstill (which I like for fun factor) and feels faster when you step on it while rolling. Love the look of the big brakes on the C63s vs somewhat smallish 991.2 base brakes. Finally, surprisingly a lot more interest in the C63s at the local Cars & Coffee vs. the 991.2.
Would I go back to Porsche….absolutely…but as stated above I’d want to go with a GTS. Would I deter you from going with a 991.2 base…absolutely not…I’m all for experiencing different cars and scratching the itch when opportunity allows and the 911 is a great overall car in any platform.

In June I traded in my 2018 AMG C63S coupe (20,000 mi) for a 2017 Porsche 991.2 S (4,000 mi.) My C63S trade in value was the same as what I purchased it for one 1.5 years earlier with 15,000 miles less. Obviously the Porsche I purchased was inflated in value but not nearly as much as what they are now selling for. I think the 'S' model is the best performance value. Essential to me was the 1) Porsche sport package with sport exhaust (exotic turbo induction wail) and rear wheel steering, 2) sport chrono package with boost button and Sport+ driving mode.
Porsche Pros: Handling, performance (its the S model.) Acceleration a little less immediate down low because of AMG V8 torque, but considerably more +5000 rpm. The PDK transmission is wonderful. It has a center console Shifter. Better quality of materials. Everything fits like a glove and drives like magic. Timeless design. Built to be a high performance car, not AMG modified into one.
Porsche Cons: Less luggage space for trips. More of a tight enclosed interior feeling. Less comfortable on long highway trips (very fast light nimble steering = don't take your eyes off the highway for a moment.) Seats are slightly less comfortable (I had the AMG performance seats in my C63S.) Lift the trunk lid to access the engine (where's it at?) No oil dipstick only electronic oil level sensor display on dash (an aggravation.)
Porsche GTS Cons: (As a GTS alternative was mentioned) Most 991GTS Porsches have center lock wheels which require a 400 lb. torque wrench to remove. Currently they are greatly inflated in price. Most come with 'mouse fur' (alcantara) seats and steering wheel.

If I were you, I’d look at the 991.1 gen Carrera S or GTS. You may not get a CPO or as low as miles as a base 991.2 but the 911 is a solid car without much to worry about if maintained well. The 991.1 has the NA engine.
If you never need back seats, a 911 is a great upgrade. All the luxury stuff missing will be easily forgotten once you are driving it.

Yeah - i do think the S model would be a better performance compared to the C63S I have now. But, they are going for 115k+ which is just about 15k more than i can spend right now.
Yeah, the 991.2 base will beat a C63s on a track, but I don't track. The C63S is just a more powerful car.
I've ALWAYS wanted a 911 and the base I scoped out is gorgeous and has a lot of options, but it's a different driving experience. With the AMG - you really can't go past 6k RPM or it dies off and then you can hit the limiter, the 911 (even turbo) you can rev out. The base 911 may be more usable because the power level of the C63S is just a bit insane and i could get into trouble in it very easily. I do love the feature of the C63S such as driving assist (parking assist SUCKS), digital dash, ambient lights, performance seats ,red calipers, intoxicating exhaust, traction control knob. The only gripe i have is with the COMAND system sucking
FWIW - in Texas, most of my driving is highway cruising. Also, we have another vehicle we use for trips + errands, this is car is specifically my toy + date night ride with the wife.

With a COBB tube ($1750) you can bring the performance of a Carrera base to that of a Carrera S. I think were seeing the last of high performance gasoline cars. Some manufacturers are giving us their last hurrah - Corvette Z06 for example. It's a sad state of affairs and what will be the future value of these last hurrahs? Obsolete Cars or Investment Collector Cars? The recent inflationary prices seem to predict Collector. ???

If you have the prefacelift c63s coupe then get the full carbahn kit. Takes the ride comfort and handling to the next level plus no more vagueness steering feel. Haven’t drove the 911 base model yet so can’t compare. Drove the gt3 rs and i’d argue the c63s is just as fun on canyon roads but of course it’s no match on the track. 911 base the c63 coupe with carbahn kit can absolutely hang with on canyons or track

I had a fully loaded 991.2 GTS for 12 months and it was one of my least favourite cars I've ever owned. For all the talk of 'how great' 911s are they understeer like pigs and I just couldn't gel with this at all. They also sound extremely muted in the cabin and unless you open the windows or roof you don't get much noise or sense of drama. I also found the build quality to be extremely sketchy and had numerous issues in the 12 months including a failed water pump that required to car to be towed to Porsche when it was 8 days old! I also thought the lack of tech made it seem extremely dated as I had came from an M4 with a HUD and a 360 camera. The best thing about it for me was the rear end grip but that's about all I liked.
I traded it for an AMG GTR and had to drive it 500 miles to do the change and the GTR was incredibly loud compared to the 911 and felt MUCH better build and sturdy in every way. Have since changed the GTR for a C63S coupe and would take it over a 911 any day.

I had a 2017 911S that I sold (unfortunately just missed the timing of the big price boom). I’m not a performance nut but I do like a capable car. I have had two other 911’s and must say my 2017 was the best because of the twin turbos. Much quicker off the line. I totally disagree about the idea of getting a 991.1. You will not be happy with the lack of acceleration off the line especially coming out of a C63s. Being 64 with back issues, the C63 gets the nod. I was never into exhaust sounds but the sound of my C63s cab is really nice. I find I’m always making sure the exhaust button is on. The agility of the 911 is great. There is a big difference in a car when you don’t have the massive weight of the engine in the front. That being said, I find driving my C63 to be more fun. It is still a very capable handling car especially for how I drive. Although I do miss the center console shifter, I am getting use to the paddle shifting. It gives me more time with my hands gripping the Alcantara steering wheel which was the best low cost options I had in my build. Love, love, love it! I miss the touchscreen from the Porsche but the controls on my C63 steering wheel, easily makes up for that loss. Build quality is similar but I think the nod goes to Porsche
I will end this critique with this thought; Most if not all car enthusiasts have either have had a 911 or has desired to own one. If you have a chance to get a 911(991.2) go for it. It's definitely difficult. I think I may opt for the 911 for now. I agree on the 991.1 - I didn't like it very much (the S model), had to mash the throttle for it to move at all and it was dated tech-wise. Love the way the 991.2 drives!
One thing is, I can probably have more fun with the base 911 than the C63S. It's fun to rev out the engine, the PDK is more responsive. Yes, the soundtrack and luxury of the C63s isn't going to be beaten by a 911 - but it doesn't need to. It feels surgical when you drive it.
The price factor is big, i'd be getting a fully loaded base for just above what the KBB value for it is ($93k) - certified with 2 year warranty and 21k miles. It's the exact spec I want!

I think you're set either way, I would go 911, and if it is not everything you were expecting, trade for the C63S, a great thing about 911's are their ability to hold value.

You will need to adjust your driving style as all the weight is behind the back wheels. Slow in, fast out of corners. Steering will be more communicative and the car will sit lower. While the 911 is very versatile, you won't be able to carry large items. I need to have my dealership hold my winter tires, as their is no way to get them into the car on one trip, but I can do that with my C63S. Both cars are great. I think most folks that have a 911 have 2 cars.

just wanted to throw my .02 in. I like modding cars. The base 991.2 can be made to GTS power levels relatively cheap through APR tuning. For 6k you can put on GTS turbos and intercooler and tune and it would be plenty of power. Only thing left to upgrade would be the suspension (if desired) and the brakes. If you get a base carerra 4 youll have the wide rear hips like the gts. if you get just the c2 the body is not as wide in the rear.
Ultimately the 911 wont swing as much attention but when you drive it you'll fall in love with how good of a car it is. if its mainly highway driving id consider staying with the c63 though... the 911 base in stock form doesnt have the upper end grunt like the amg. but as i said above a tune and a few bolt on will change that quite easily!

I just test drove some new 992's with PDK, sport exhaust and some other goodies and I must say - I am not really impressed. I always wanted to own a 911 but after my test drive I am less eager to do so. Yeah, nice looking, nice handling...but less exhilarating driving experience (I am not carving canyon corners all day but tried to throw it on corners on test drive). Interior is pretty bland if you don't upgrade with the all leather dash and door trim etc, lots of plastic. Don't get me wrong, really nice car but between the cost of it and the less than exhilarating power I am less intrigued now. Maybe I try a GTS next but that's another 40-50k...ideally a Turbo S but now we are talking even more money just to get the same punch in the gut when pushing it like I get on my C63s.

Kinda true, Diehard Porsche fan here, but is dying on me. The Turbo S is the only one besides of course the GT3 RS etc but those prices are insane now. honestly I rather keep the C63 and buy a super car like a 570S or 600LT for the price and looks etc.
