Madtrace Magnetic Paddle Shifters Review

Hello MB folks,

I recently purchased and installed these magnetic paddle shifters by JQ Werks.
These seem to be fairly popular with the BMW/Audi/Porsche folks, but I haven't seen any forum posts from the AMG side, so I wanted to give this brief review.

Product Overview
The overall construction seems very solid and well made, the shifter body is made of aluminum, and the paddles are carbon fiber.
You get two paddle styles, one is F1 style and the other is more akin to the OEM paddles.

Installation
Just search up "AMG steering wheel disassembly" on youtube and you will find plenty of videos on how to access the paddle shifters to swap them.
Make sure to disconnect main battery before removing the airbag.
Also, you may get an airbag warning light when reconnecting the airbag after installation. A simple code clear should fix this, assuming everything has been reassembled correctly.

Click Click
These paddles are very clicky. They are definitely louder than OEM.
The action is very satisfying and tactile. The distance traveled is also just right; not too short, not too long.
Here is a short video:

Conclusion
I would say they are worth it if you are looking for something to replace the OEM paddles.
There are companies that sell shifter extensions (not even a shifter replacement) for more money than this, so I would say it's worth it

Reviving an old thread here.

I have installed these on several marques and I am aware of how much care needs to be taken.

I am striking out when searching YouTube for a step by step tutorial on disassembling the AMG steering wheel for paddle shifter installation. There is one video in an Asian language with English subtitles, but it doesn’t give me the detail I prefer.

Does anyone have a video, a step by step list, or can anyone point me in the right direction finding the appropriate video?

Here is the steering wheel I will be working with.

You want to remove the three screws that i outlined in this picture. Then, You should be able to remove the entire trim piece that I highlighted in green.
Once it is removed, you should be able to clearly see how the paddles are wired/connected to the steering wheel. Remove the connection and replace it with the new paddles.
EDIT: I will also add that when the silver trim piece is removed, there will be connections for the buttons. You don't have to remove that connection, you can leave it on. Just remove the paddle connections.

the install of the paddle shifters is pretty self explanatory, there are only 5 screws holding everthing together plus 2 more for the paddles. cant go wrong

Reviving an old thread so I don't need to post a new one. Anyone have trouble with the middle torx bolts? I've broken two t20's trying to remove them. Do they apply threadlocker from the factory?

theres not thread locker on them, sometimes they are just cranked in there, huge pain when they snap in the wheel

newest amg wheel the 2022+ wheel has a different housing for the paddles. So yes you can get mag paddles but won’t be the exact ones from this thread if that makes sense

I got the Madtrace paddles fitted - was difficult to find them shipped to Canada but worth every penny!

Installation was a breeze although removing steering wheel was nervewracking

@C60 Free

Show picture from your retrofit.
I will see how it looks.

That FL steering wheel looks nice - there is a „all gloss black“ version to.

12 o clock mark ( red/white etc) is nice too.
i would take blue.
