What is this stuff?

Hey all,

Recently bought a '19 C63 from a dealer. On the pre-purchase service order, it looks like they supposedly replaced the rear brake discs and pads. Anybody have any idea what this stuff is? Is it surface rust? It won't really come off with a rag or my finger, so I'm a little confused.

It is only on the driver's side rear hub too. The other wheels are totally fine.

Any ideas on what this is and/or how to remove it?

Thanks!

Yes, that's rust. Common in certain climates with the stock rotors. Check out the post below. Several of us have Zimmermann rotors now in the rear. They are zinc coated and don't rust, although I never had a rust problem with mine here in the mild and mostly dry Northern California climate, but those who drive a lot in the wet and/or on salted roads end up with the unsightly rust on the rear rotors.

I simply replaced the rear rotors with Zimmermann zinc coated and Genuine mb brake pads last year. So far no rust. I believe it's from winter salt conditions. If you just want to replace the rear rotor it's $122.00

just jack up and remove wheel.

Sand a bit or wire brush.
Tape off and get some caliper paint of your fave color
REd always looks good.
Paint away - Let dry and re-install wheel then do other ones.

Try not to get paint where on flat vertical surface where wheel seats to ensure wheel stays true.
