2019 C63s - Engine side Cabin Air Filter - No Box?

I've got the musty smell when I turn on my AC so about to replace all the filters, pump some Kool-It into the heater core, the whole deal. I pop the hood, remove the plastic cover on the passenger side, pull up on the plastic section holding the filter (pictured below)...

...and I was surprised to find no 'bottom' to the box. Just a lot of empty space, and maybe what looks like a vent or drain at the bottom? I did some searching and the videos I could find seemed to be on C300s, where there's no box but there is a battery in that space. So, is this big empty void just unused space and the filter is exposed on the bottom side, or is there supposed to be some sort of enclosure here?

Seems like a lot of wasted space and surprising that it's just exposed to the engine compartment like that.

Maybe I'll make a little storage box for down there, keep all my secret stuff hidden away.

Mine C63S has a battery under that filter (convertible). Isn’t there a secondary filter in the cabin?

Maybe the convertible doesn't have room in the trunk, or the weight balance is different.

There's a second filter inside, behind the glove box accessed from the passenger footwell.

The MB required Service maintenance for both filters is every 2 years/20,000 miles. I change both filters every year on my 2019 C63s coupe.

Nope nothing under it. Just a big open space with the bottom of that filter exposed
