Focal finally released their plug and play speakers for our cars. They have all of the speakers versions and subwoofers. I am finally going to pull the trigger on this as I wasn’t sure which route to go before. Exciting stuff.

I've never heard of Focal, but admittedly am no audiophile. Interested nonetheless in how the sound is improved as I know my 2017 Coupe is a bit lacking in the audio department.

 

Focal makes some of the very best car audio components money can buy. I’m sure this will sound awesome.

I am looking at that and what would be the best option for Burmester replacement? Premium 11.2? What are the differences between 7.2, 9.2 and 11.2? This site is not very detailed what it really is and does.

Ok I have the prices. Not too bad for Flax series speakers.

Mercedes Focal speakers are 90 days out. The IC MBZ100 is $550, IC MBZ 100 $599, ICR MBZ100 $550, ICC MBZ 100 $275, and I SUB MBZ 2 (pair of subs) is $999.99. Those are all MAP numbers.

 

Elitex, did you ever do this? What did you go with if so and was it worth it?

 

I'm also interested in how these sound. I swapped out the Bose system in my W163 for Focals and never looked back, they sound amazing.

 

I went with the focal inside speakers in my 2018 C43. The installer, sound waves, in Parsippany NJ replaced all 13 speakers in my car’s “Burmester” premium sound system as well as added sound deadening material to help with some of the rattles and improve sound quality by removing vibration. Replacing the speakers alone was not enough. Although there was a big improvement, the sound was still off in a different way. They were way too bright and mid heavy. I called Focal to see if there was a way to dial down the brightness a little with the factory equalizer. They said they are designed to be more neutral and bright but you really need to get a separate dsp/amp to fix it since you don’t get enough control with the factory eq. They explained it the following way, which was also explained to me by the pros at Sound Waves. The car manufactures use very cheap speakers (even in premium systems), but compensate for their physical decencies by playing with the equalization of the amp to make it sound better. Once I replaced the speakers, I had a tuning deficiency from the factory amp that was compensating for the garbage speakers that used to be there. Focal said there are only about 15 shops in the country that could put it all together and tune it properly. I just happen to love a half hour from one. Maybe some of you guys can install all of this and tune it. I didn't even try and don't have the time. In the end Sound Waves installed a Helix V Twelve DSP/AMP and tuned it perfectly. I have 2 settings, driver and all, depending on if I have people in the car with me. I can add up to 10 sound profiles. They even measured each speakers distance to my ear for the driver's setting in the DSP/amp. I was worried about spending the money to do all this and then not be pleased with how it turned out. It was extraordinarily expensive and time intensive but the sound is unreal. I have multiple hifi headphones and a hifi stereo system at home and I think this might be better than any of them.

 

DId you have to get a amplifier and get anything adjusted?

 

you don't need to replace every speaker. The subs, center and front doors are likely good enough. Most high end systems don't really touch the rear fill speakers.

I have been thinking about these too. The subs I think are likely the best bang per buck but the install looks like it would take more time than anticipated. The center is very easy to take out and put in. and the doors are likely in the middle. Focal has some install videos which are great.

 

Interesting makes sense given the unusual speaker setup.

Did the installers mention any areas of particular that needed dynamat/sound insulation?

 

You are correct that you don't need to replace every speaker and might be able to do it yourself. I didn't have the time and I don't have the patience or confidence to take apart the car to that level. Also just replacing the speakers was not enough as the stock amp screws up the sound. The system needed a new amp and needed to be tuned properly. The focal subs are so sweet and probably are the best bang for the buck. The level of detail my system has now is incredible.
