Battery replacement - Plug and play or does it require coding?

I own a c63 w205 2017 and have an amber battery warning light on the dash. The battery is reading just below 12V. I believe once the voltage drops below 12.3V it's due for a change (its an old battery too to be fair, the factory battery is still fitted). I can get a OEM equivalent by Bosch for £250. I'd like to fit or have a specialist fit but I've seen mixed responses on the need for the new battery to be coded.

Is this required? Is it safe to drive without coding? If I fit it, can MB code it after? - I'm due a service in May so I could get it done then if I can drive the car without issues for a couple months

I changed the AGM battery in a 2016 C63 S without re-coding (and expect to do the same, soon, with our 2017 C43). I did not buy an OEM battery.

Thanks for confirming. Once changed, did the warning light stop appearing?

I just had the battery replaced in my 2019. The OE battery was $325.38, so that Bosch replacement isn't any cheaper at the current exchange rate. Work order states that they normalized all windows afterwards. No mention of coding anything.

Thanks, I saw others saying OEM battery replacement from main dealer was near $1000, will check with my dealer.

Total cost with labor and battery disposal fee was just over $500.

I had battery warning light come on after I believe after 3 1/2 years of ownership. I call MB Service and SA encouraged to bring it in. So I drove to MB Service and the battery was faulty. See below what was replaced and reset. My 2019 C63s was still under warranty so no charge. I waited at Dealership, job took about 2 hours.

I guess the reset is part of the reset in SAM? So the car recognize the new battery and adjust charge rate accordingly?

Prior to getting the battery replaced my Mercedes me connect phone app would display the battery status as PARTIAL CHARGE. Simply opening and closing the door would put the battery status as PARTIAL CHARGE.
So immediately after I had the battery replaced maybe 2 years ago or longer( MB Dealership)the Mercedes me connect phone app displayed the battery status as CHARGED and it has stayed that way. Photo below was just taken.

How long per trip do you drive each day?

Nice, but that's no where near the case in our area. In addition, here, the OEM battery has a 2 year pro-rated warranty and many other suppliers' batteries have a 5-year full replacement warrantly.

I think the "reset" is simply re-syncing the windows and, if installed, sun roof closures. That's just a matter of fully opening then fully closing each one while holding the switch for a number of seconds at one or both ends ... I forget which end but, IIRC, last time I did it I just held the switch open for 10 seconds after it reached the fully open position, then did the same at the fully closed position. AFAIK, these are normally unaffected if they're in the fully closed position when the battery is disconnected.

I see, I was curious because it said register in SAM. Forum members been suspecting it means to teach vehicle that a new battery is installed and all those things.

A 5-year warranty seems excessive and I have to wonder why they feel the need for that. Are their batteries prone to fail prematurely? I've never had a battery fail within 5 years. Even my old battery at 6 years technically still held up, but I've been having an issue with my digital cluster and I thought it could be the aging battery. Wasn't the case, so I'm in the process of getting setup with BenzNinja to reload/update the cluster, but AGM batteries are kinda past their prime at 4-6 years anyway, so piece of mind I suppose.

As for dealership pricing, I guess inflated pricing is what you get in areas where competition is spread out. Next dealership a 100 miles away or whatever. I live in an expensive part of the world, but have like 5 dealerships within a 30 miles radius. If one tries to overcharge customers, they just go elsewhere.

It’s ideal to let your car know you’ve installed a new batt via reprogramming as newer cars have a battery management system which changes flow of current to various components according to battery condition… so even though you may not notice any difference without coding, you may end up with suboptimal current flow resulting in a shorter battery life… pretty sure the 2017 c63s also needs a battery reset/reprogramming

OK, I have to say that that's the most "different" interpretation I've ever heard for a manufacturer offering longer-duration warranties. The reason longer and more comprehensive warranties are offered on products is (ostensibly) to show the consumers that the supplier has more confidence in the product and that they stand behind any abnormalities ... which do occur if you're selling large enough quantities. Clearly, if they have a product that regularly fails, offering longer and/or more comprehensive warranties would be a decision that would lower profitability.

With the OEM short-term pro-rated warranty, if a battery does fail prematurely (and it does happen), you'll get no warranty or a partial reimbursement, depending upon when the battery was purchased, assuming you replace it with another of the same batteries. With a 5-year replacement warranty, if it fails within 5 years, you get a new replacement battery at no cost. While I've never needed such a replacement, I do know someone who has had a replacement on an almost 4-year old battery. If it'd been an OEM battery, he'd have paid the full price for a new one.

While I'd agree that it is "ideal," I'd also bet that the only effect is short term. I say that because, in order to adapt to an aging battery (which is what constitutes the battery management), the software has to employ some adaptation, AKA "learning." Normally, such learning tends to "smooth things out" so the system isn't erratic but will, after some time, adapt to a battery that suddenly has a different status.

Yeah, I get all that. We are talking about a $300 part, though. I don't think warranty is that important given how rarely they fail.

I have a 17S and have never changed the battery but oddly I have been getting the gas cap CEL which I have reset a few times recently (ordered a new cap this week to see if that is culprit) but some saying it could be due to low aux battery. My scanner does a battery health scan and put the battery in the mid range. Now I have owned the car since 2021 so this could be the original battery, which I think I'll replace. On MBParts online you can source one for around $224. I am going to see if local dealer will price match, see how that goes..lol......but think I will swap them both out to avoid any issues surprising me later.

The 205 doesn't have an aux battery as in an actual battery. It's just a small capacitor that temporarily stores energy. Mainly to assist with stop/start and shifting the transmission into park. It's also known as the voltage converter. Some recommend to replace it at the same time the main battery is replaced, but I didn't do that.
