It's by design. If you look at them at an angle, the part on the trunk appears brighter than the rest of the tail lights. It's been brought up before. Just ignore it and move on.

Or how about lets hold the manufacture accountable for a bad design on a $80k+ car? How will AMG get better if we don't hold them accountable?

This design is given by the base model. Same tail lights in a ~$40k C200 sold in Europe. Gotta realize that this is not an $80k car. The AMG upgrades push the price higher, but the model itself starts at a far lower price point, so the common parts are designed to a lower price point. With the AMG you are paying for the engine, which if you need a new one will set you back about $70k. You are not paying for a different tail light design.

Okay, that makes sense! Have you seen this brake light issue on 2017 - 2023 models? Or is it only on 2017 models?

Yes, I have. I see it on my 2019. It's got to do with the housing and how the light is being reflected. The light just isn't reflected to the side in a uniform way. Looking at it directly from behind as drivers behind you do, it's uniform. The tail lights are designed to shine the light rearwards and not to the side. It really is a non issue.
