Import to Canada or buy local?

The CDN dollar is in the tank, but E-classes are still MUCH cheaper in the US.

After duty, taxes and exchange rates, a decent 2005 E500 can run around 35K; locally, most are over 40K.
Do you think it's still worth it to import? At what currency exchange rate do you think it's worthwhile?

you still gotta face the charges for making the vehicle DOT/SAE approved and get the proper VI documents done....

imho, it think its not worth the hassel to deal with all the paperwork....just buy the vehicle here in canada, and save urself a headache.

how bad could it be?

my brother and a couple of friends have brought cars in from the US...
the only "hassle" was getting DRLs, which can't be too much trouble.

i could not find anE500 wagon with all the options in 2006 so bought a certified pre owned at mb lindon in utah. it was 103,000 with the full load in canada and after all mod to make legal in canada at an 88cent dollar including 6.1% duty 60k all in. this car was 2years old and in absolutely flawless condition. after the class action suite mercedes canada backed down on the bumper changes so its even cheaper now. i also bought my wife a gorgeous clk55 cab with chrome rims in phoenix for $15,000 less than i would have to pay up here. i am currently shopping for an e55 ore63 wagon as well as a gl320 cdi. iwould expect to save at least ten thousand on each vehicle plus i fly down with my oldesy boy and we drive them back and its a fun roadtrip for us.

When you import the car, does MB still honor the warranty? I know that they dont honor the roadside assistance. My brother who lives in Portland bought a E350 for $20000, which would sell here for about $35-40000. That what i will do going forward

what about the cluster? MBs don't seem to have a primary and secondary scale (mph / kmph).

You can change the digital speed reader in the middle of the cluster to kph through the steering wheel controls.

Do share your experiences if you go this route (or at least any research you did). MB Canada however, does price the C63 competitively here compared to the US. I guess you meant picking up a used one, which is where the real savings are compared to buying in Canada.

Even a new one is cheaper as they are sitting on dealer lots and offering discounts. In Calgary, no so much. MSRP is the name of the game here.

I have a 2010 on order, but it will be an August build, so I won't see it until the middle of Fall.

So---the bumper bull #$@^ no longer applies? U don't need Mercedes to approve it?

So now you can just import a Mercedes and pass the Out of province and out of Country inspection and drive it?

yes its true as long as you have the child safety chair tab in the back seats but if the car has it it will have a little tab with a child in a safety seat on it, and yo u will need to have the airbag info in french. and have a way to show kph. either than that it is the same as importing any other car. the bumpers dont matter and you dont have to have anything done at a dealer like they say you do unless you want to get or keep an extended warranty. if you have any other questions shoot me a pm.

just brought my 05 slk350 back. No issues, no bumpers, straight import.

Worked out to about $30k CAD for 85,000km SLK LOADED, nav, harmon kardon, lighting, air scarf, sport suspension etc.

Cheapest here was about $33k- $35k + PST at the minmum. for a barebones SLK. Still saved maybe close to $10k

Check out the prices on the 2010 E Class. Prices are cheaper in Canada with the same content. US cars come fairly basic compared to Canadian models. This will be reflected in value of used cars in the future.

there are no longer bumper discrepencies between US and Canada regulations. So feel free to import whatever your heart takes you.
