Removed the resonators on my CL6
Hey guys!
this is for those of you who have thought about doing it.
Sound: Car goes from Mute to audible. I would say like a stock BMW 3 series.
Power: mid to high end noticeable. I am not sure how removing a resonator does this, but i guess technically you removed restriction.
I paid $60 at a locall shop to get this done. Not like it matters in a 4400 lb. car, but exchanging the resonators for pipes, you save about 15 lbs.

yes. But i think the ecu adjusted to the reduced backpressure. The car feels much more responsive and somewhat faster off the line now.
I would get a soundclip of it, but i dont think i can pick up the sound without a really nice mic. car is still very quiet even at WOT.
im contemplating about the race muffler from www.eisenhaus.com there is a sound clip there for you guys.

well I can tell you I have heard my 600 without ANY mufflers, and it was still quiet. I have the eisenhaus, its still quiet, but at 4000+ RPM's it wails. Its Deep. Deeper, quieter, and a smoother tone than any CL55. Sounds nothing like a BMW 3.
Its perfect for me now, but a few years ago I may have gone with the race version and removed the resonators too. The sound on that clip is a V8... V12 has a different tone and is quieter overall.
Did you cut the pipes to remove the resonators? You do realize you are cutting stainless steel right? and at a muffler shop, most likely replacing it with aluminized steel.

ok
I just called eisenmann. He told me that it will have a 6-8 hp increase. My friend had a Toyota Supra twin turbo back in the day. and an exhaust yielded him over 30 ponies. does that mean that our 600's are already maxed out out of the box?

On the Supra, that is running a vaccum wastegate actuator, once you change the exhaust, the wastegate is then staying closed longer because of the lower backpressure and the engine is getting more boost from the turbocharger. That is what is creating half of those 30 horses. On an N/A car its different.
It also tells me that on the MB the exhaust system is well designed from the get-go, and is not too restrictive.
Eisenmann is very conservative, whereas the Supra exhaust makers make somewhat wild claims. Reality is probably that the eisenmann delivers exactly what they claim, and the others deliver half what they claim.
If you combine the exhaust with a better filter and an ECU upgrade, as a combination these will deliver more power to the car than the sum of the parts.
If you are doing teh exhaust for some massive power gain, its not the right thing. I did feel a definite difference with mine right away and backed it up with some readings from my G-tech. Unfortunately I did a wheel/tire upgrade at the same time so I can't know exactly which gave me how much, but my car was just over .3 sec quicker through the quarter on an average of 5 runs in both directions.

.3 seconds!
from an exhaust upgrade, that is HUGE. i am assuming that you got bigger wheels. in which case, it should mean that there is more rotational mass thus slowing down the car. If you still got .3 less on the 1/4, that must mean it would be even faster had you not changed the wheels.
do you have pictures of your car? sound clip of the exhaust maybe?
wait, i just read your reply again. You say that its different on a NA car. i have the 2003 TT Cl600.

You have a TT? then you will make bigger gains. I definitely did NOT slow down the car with the wheel change. Stock AMG's and Dunlop tires were swapped for Renntech Monolites and PS2's. Each wheel/tire combo was over 13 pounds lighter than stock. Renntech monolites are 19.9 pounds in the size I got. Lightest wheels you can get. So I do attribute some of that gain to the wheels. But I know for a fact the exhaust is helping.
The lowest average # listed for HP gain at Eisenhaus.com is 6%. On a V12TT that is 30HP. I would say it should be more than a 6-8 HP increase. Maybe he meant the N/A motor. Did he know you have a TT?!
I am willing to bet anything there would be some noticable gain with the race muffler and the resonators gone.
I will post pics of my car soon. Just haven't had a chance to take any. I tried getting the exhaust clip with my cell phone but it came out terrible. I need a real microphone.

RENNtech monolites are sickly light wheels. They weigh less than a stock setup --> meaning less moment of intertia --> less rotational intertia --> more angular acceleration --> quicker angular velocity --> faster car.

there is a set on ebay now
for $2000. i think its a great deal. I want the exhaust too. Dont think the girlfriend will appreciate me dropping $4k on the car and $0 on her.

Other then that though, I'd send an e-mail to info@euroteckmotorsports.com and tell him about this thread. Neal is an authorized RENNtech dealer as well as a sponsor for MBWorld.org. On top of that, he's also a Eisenmann exhaust dealer.

If you have a 600 you can get quad tips and it will look a lot better too.

The sound is another major reason, this thing just sounds better than anything I have heard, including the AMG exhausts. There is also weight savings, and its a very high quality part. The 8 HP gain is just a bonus.
Look plenty of people change the wheels on their car and they get either no performance gain or they get worse performance... but they still shell out thousands for it. So its not crazy to want to get a different exhaust system for $1600. I don't like aftermarket stuff in general and anything I put on my car has to be quality. And this part was. I could have stuck some exhaust tips on the car, but I just want everything on my car to be clean and well built. If thats $1600, then its $1600.
