CL600 Stalled today, what could be wrong?

Hey guys..Funny thing the past few days I've been thinking about selling my 2001 CL600 and getting something reliable like a new Lexus GS or something even a 745li. But after much thinking I decided to just buy a cheap everyday car and keep this CL for weekends, its just a gorgeous car.

But today I was driving. I drove it all day and at night I came up to a stop light and the car just stalled out of no where. I didn't even know it stalled as the interior and headlights where still on as well as the radio, when I gassed, nothing. Steering was pretty much out. By the time I realized it stalled and I restarted it I already looked like an idiot out there lol. Drove the car home, got some gas and everything appears normal.

My question is has this ever happened to anyone else? What can possibly be the problem? No warning lights nothing. Just stalled. Wasn't cold or anything really. I'm most afraid that it will do it on me again while the car is in motion or worse, on the freeway.

Any input would be appreciated guys.

Thanks,
Danny

W203 slightly modified
Judging by the age of the car. I would suspect that the problem is the crankshaft sensor is old.

It only happens when the car is hot .... then I would replace that sensor on the bell housing of the transmission. Cheap insurance even if I am wrong.

I suggest you take your car into the workshop. I had a simular problem and they said the car was missing at high RPM (check engine light was on). It was sending repair codes to the computer, causing the car to stall....or something like that. I have found these cars to be very technical and they need to be taken to the shop periodicly to download the codes. Last time I took it in for something, they found other issues that were related to a missfire.

It's most likely a bad MAF or a vacuum leak. Does it run rough or hesitate at any time? Just take it in and they can see what is wrong or they will have had experience with items that usually fail on your model. Is it tripping a fault code at all?

Thanks for the replies everyone.

No errors or anything from the IC. ran normal and it only happened once. I will likely have it checked out when I get my brakes done. BTW does anyone know if brakes going out will lead to the "ESP" / BRAKE ASSIST light coming on from time to time? I sure hope it just means I need new brakes.

My lockup on the torque convertor was not disengaging and this was causing my CL55 to stall. It will also cause weirdness with the electronic throttle control and the ESP, as the ECU has to "work hard" to keep the car from stalling and that can cause some of the systems to freak.

Check engine light will often times not come on in the event of a lockup that is not disengaging. That is a good indicator the lockup is amiss (stalling with no check engine light). A problem with the engine control systems should eventually cause the check engine light to stay on.

If it becomes frequent, the technician can hook up the diagnostic equipment and drive the car around with the lockup disabled to confirm the issue. A simple fix might be to change the tranny filter and fluid.

stall

i had similar symptoms and it slowly got worse. i thot it was starter and replaced it, but turns out it was ignition crank sensor. about $100 for part plus extra for labor. good luck.
p.s. i had considered getting a 600, but we all take our cars for granted when it's running.

Thanks for the reply guys.

I tried to drive the car today but it did feel weird, like it didn't have as much power as before. And theres some noise under the hood but that could be in my mind the V12 was always making some sort of noise. So after a block I turned around and drove home and took my other car.

This week I'll change the tranny fluid and filter and see what happens. If problems are still there I'll likely bring it to the dealer and see what they said.

Thanks guys,
