CL600 blowing steam

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question... but this has never happened on my previous motors, 911/996 or SLK230, but my recent purchase (used) 2002/3 CL600 seems to be blowing steam.

At first I thought it was smoke (oil). It is apparent when starting the car from cold, BUT ALSO when the car is warm. I see it in the rear view mirror when using the accelerator, backing off, then accelerator again. Town speeds.

This behaviour is like burning oil which I experienced with my Alfa Duetto 1970. However, on the CL600, when I go to the back of the car and smell the exhaust, it smells of steam (damp air) and not oil.

Does anyone have an explanation?

Ambient temperature 5-9 degrees C. Medium humidity.

From what you say I would guess a blown head gasket. I would head to the workshop....
