Check engine light/vibration/etc!
Hey everyone,
My "friendly" check engine light came on again today. However, this time it was blinking. The only malfunction message that popped up is a "Brake Lining Wear" which I know means I need a brake job. Besides that, the car started vibrating when I slow down or when I'm at a standstill/stop. Are the brakes causing this problem or could it be some ECU or sparkplug issue? The car drives fine when driving over 20 mph. The last time (last year) the car vibrated my belts broke and the car dropped violently, not to mention blowing the engine fan. Any fyi would be helpful. Thanks in advance for your time and knowledge.

The blinking CEL basically means you have a misfire. It could be something as simple as needing new spark plugs, but it could also mean you have oil leaking into the intake manifold causing the miss by coating your spark plugs or one or both of the coils could be faulty.
How many miles do you have on the car?

I got almost 77k miles on it. Today I noticed that the car didn't idle at all when I started. However, when I pushed the throttle too hard the CEL popped up again. I'm thinking it might be a fuel injector problem. I'm clueless until Monday when I drop it off. What do you think?

while you are at the dealer, tell them to also update your Engine ECU software. I guarantee there is an update available.
my guess is fouled spark plugs

Couple of things that happened to me, that could be the problem with your car??
1. Vibration-Rattle....I just had my catalytic converters replaced. they will replace under warranty if you car has under 80,000 miles. It rattled between 500 & 1500. It is a big deal, my car was sluggish. they replaced the entire exhaust system from engine through to muffler.
2. I had a very faint vibration you could feel in the seat while at idle. It was a faulty wiring harness on the plugs causing a slight misfire compared to the other cylinders. This is not an expensive fix depeding on how may wires are misfiring??
Good luck at the dealer?

Just got a call this morning from my service advisor. He told me the CEL was due to a messed up mass oxygen sensor. Funny thing is, I had a similar problem when my belts, ABC, and O2 sensor failed. Luckily, that time it was covered under warranty. However, this time my repair bill came out to be $800 for a new one with labor. One quick question: Is there more than one type of oxygen sensor? Thanks for everyone's input.

I think its the MAS(mass air flow sensor)? I'm going there tomorrow to pick up the car. Does the price sound right for the MAS? I was a bit shocked to hear the price but I'm going to find out and negotiate a tomorrow. What do you think?

a mass airmeter is installed in less than 1 hr shop time and is 315.00 online for an OEM benz Mass Air Flow Sensor so do the math, and u can install it yourself also and save a few bucks. Your dealer will install OEM parts that u did not buy from them.

You're right Jay. By the time my SA told me, he already ordered the part. I'm going to talk to him tomorrow and ask why he's ripping me on the labor. I told him before I brought the car in that whatever parts he needed, he should order it from Jamie. But, I guess he ordered them from a local Benz dealer because he didn't have one in stock. Anyway, I should have heeded the advice.

MAS and 02 Oxygen Sensors.
All under extended warranty. MAS was $ 450.00 Installed.
$ 800.00 is a "pure rape" price for a MAS.
