Lightbulb DIY Cabin Air Filters - Charcoal & Dust

Last night I replaced my cabin dust and charcoal filters (4 in total) and all I can say is WOW; They were filthy. The best part is that musty, smelly odor from the air conditioning is gone.

Here's a summary of the steps for my CL (W215):

DISCLAIMER: This is my experience with my own vehicle. I am assuming no responsibility with the outcome on your vehicle. Perform at your own risk.

*Replace cabin dust filters (15 Minutes, 1st time)
1. Open glove compartment
2. Remove the 6 screws holding the glove compartment housing in place. (2 are facing you when you open the door, 2 are right above the first two and the remaining 2 are on the edges facing you, left and right, by the door hinges)
3. Remove the glove compartment housing. Keep the light and lock assembly attached. Just rest it on you knee.
4. In front of you, you'll see a wide "H" shaped latch. Slide it open. It secures the lid for the filter housing.
5. When you remove the cover, the filters are there side by side.
6. Remove and replace filters, install in reverse order.

*Replace cabin charcoal filters (45 Minutes, 1st time)
1. In the passenger footwell, the carpeted knee guard has 2 screw/bolts and one regular screw in the center towards the rear.
2. Remove the floor mat and furthest section of the carpeting (by foot rest). Just pull back and fold towards you.
3. Do the same for the carpeting to on the left side of the passenger footwell. The carpet really secures the knee guard pretty well.
4. Looking upside down with your head in the footwell facing up (the best view, but not comfortable) slide the rear most plastic panel away from where it joins the knee guard panel. This panel has a bunch of vent holes in it. The two panels interlock.
5. The knee guard panel will need to slide down, then away. When you're in the footwell, just pull down. It comes out really easy as long as there are no obstructions from the carpeting.
6. When both panels are removed, there is a clear view of 2 "H" shaped latches, perpendicular to the floor.
7. Same as the dust replacement, slide and remove the covers. Pull the filters out. Install in reverse order.

Hope this helps for anyone wanting to DIY. Feel free to contact me with any questions.

My pleasure Jud. Trying to support the "sharing information" cause which unfortunately is severely lacking in our fine model 215!

baezcl600,
I would guess they're the same since the dash layout is the same. When you order the filters, just include the vehicle year and model number in order to ensure the correct part number. I bought mine from buymbparts.com for about $117 for both the dust and charcoal filters. 2 come with each set.

Good luck!

I wonder what the recommended replacement interval is. Mine were changed under MB's free "B" Service about 2 years ago.

On my 2003 CL500 the "dust" filter is listed in the "B" service or 20,000 miles. The activated charcoal filter is scheduled to be changed at 60,000 miles or 5 years.
