Question Clunking Noise on 2001 CL500

Hoping someone here may have experienced this or possibly steer me in the right direction. I mentioned this in a previous thread, but figured it would be beneficial to the forum to have a dedicated thread for the issue.

I'm experiencing a pronounced "clunk" that's noticed especially when the windows are open. Imagine hitting two hollow metal pipes together having one in each hand. That’s the kind of sound I’m hearing. It only happens when backing up and applying the brake while in motion. I can repeatedly create the noise by backing up, stopping and backing up again so it’s somehow triggered by the brakes. I don’t have a clue what it is or where to begin. It’s been like this for a while and when I did my brakes months back I didn’t see anything that stood out as abnormal. The noise is def coming from the rear of the car and sounds the same either left or right side.

Hoping someone can chime in.

Thanks!!

That does not sound good....
I would pull the rear wheels off and check if a caliper bolt has come loose.

Thanks Chauss!

I was thinking along those lines after my initial post. When leaving work yesterday, I took a peek at the rear calipers through the wheels and noticed that my driver side pad pin is inserted much deeper than the passenger side. Also, the sound seems to be more on the driver side. Regardless, I'm gonna remove the wheel and inspect the caliper thoroughly. Updates to follow.

Problem solved. I inspected both rear calipers carefully today and it was related to the pad pin. The passenger side pin was loose, causing the pad to shift and hit the caliper every time I applied the brakes in reverse. Hammered it back in and the noise is gone now.
