Hypothetically speaking it would really depend on the CL500. Will it have some options with it or what?? I'm assuming around $95-100k+??

Depends on your dealer? How good are you at haggling?? Here's the trick tell them what's the best they can do and then walk away i'm pretty sure they will say "wait hold on...let's make a deal". And that's when you let em have it!!

but what's another few grand on a car that costs $100k? right?

but i still don't want the distronic b/c i think adam mentioned that it covers the grille. and, i'm definitely not going to get CD based nav system... c'mon, give me the world on a DVD! (ok, i'd be happy w/ just N. America, but it still needs to be on 1 DVD, not a bunch of CDs).

but adam, my real question was did you pay full price when you got your car?

When I got my car back in early 2001, CL55's were going for as high as $50,000 - $60,000 above window for a USED car (Ala, Fletcher Jones). Most dealers marked their 55's up $20,000 - $30,000 over window. I searched for approx 7 months and finally found mine new for MSRP about 800 miles away at a dealer in another state.

Moral of this story is that you can always find a car at MSRP if you wait long enough and look all over the US for it. Only 300-350 CL55's are brought to the US each model year. Therefore, supply totally was outweighed by demand.

How do these people justify/calculate their markup on USED car as much as $50-60k?? I mean why not $20-30k. Is it because it's a high end car or just the demand?

The car is only considered used in the legal sense. If it has been titled more than once (i.e., more than one name on the title), they can legally sell the cars as used, and raise the price to whatever they want, even though the car has less then 100 miles on it.

MBUSA does not allow new cars to be sold over MSRP, period.

This is how the dealers get away with the $20 - $50k mark-ups. I am sure there will be a great deal of this going on with the SL55.

But you are correct, if you walk in the dealer, and say "I want to order a NEW CL55", then he cannot charge you more than MSRP.

Any comments? I do not want to spread any incorrect information.

It is true that MBUSA doesn't like their dealers selling NEW vehicles above MSRP. However, at least here in California, it happens and MBUSA seems to look the other way. My local dealer was charing $20,000 - $30,000 over on EVERY 2001 CL55 he received (At least 3 of them that I know of). Each time some sucker would step up (Usually the day the damn car was dropped off the truck) and pay the "Markup" to take a shiney, limited production CL55 home. I still can't quite understand nor grasp why someone would do this other than that they have more money than common sense. I took my time and shopped with dealers that didn't charge over MSRP to find mine. I was on lists for a long time. Finally my number came up... It was just a waiting game. The day I bought my car I knew that I could turn around and sell it for a $20,000+ profit.
