ABC Pump Warranty

Has anyone seen anything regarding MB recently increasing the warranty on the ABC pump or any other warranty extension on the ABC system? The only thing I'm aware of is the hose replacement done under recall.

Hey Jud,
Long time. Hope all is well.

I also have only heard about the ABC high pressure hose recall and nothing else related to the ABC pump.

Yes, it's been a while, FA. Hope you and your family are all well. Re the pump, another MB forum was discussing that someone had heard that it is now or is going to be covered under an additional MB extended warranty, but I guess that's not the case. I'll call MB one of these days to find out. I've got another year of Starmark warranty on my '02 CL which has only 32k miles on it and I would like to get the pump replaced before it runs out. Don't know whether I could BS MB in to replacing it just before the warranty is up but telling them that I get a periodic growling sound from it. We'll see. Take care!

Thumbs down Active Body Control and Power Steering/Rack & Pinion Problem??? Need Help Please!

if anyone knows if this is true... My ABC is messed up as well! I have had many problems with this CL... Currently the biggest problems of the week...

1.) when turning the steering wheel it makes a sound as well as spewws out oil from the steering oil over flow!

( NOT SURE IF THIS IS THE STEERING PUMP THAT IS MAKING THE PROBLEM OR THE RACK AND PINION WHICH SOME ARE SUGGESTING THAT IT IS!!! IF ANYONE HAS HAD THIS PROBLEM FIXED OR KNOWS WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT IT WOULD BE A GREAT HELP.)

2.) ABC OR ACTIVE BODY CONTROL works after turning the car on then off then on once again....
If anyone knows if pressure is lost in the lines or if I need to BUY A SPECIFIC PART that would be great!

Thank You

Keith

Let us know the outcome of your findings. I'm sure most of us would have rather had a 10 year warranty on the ABC pump instead of the instrument cluster. Good luck man!

Keith,
Welcome to the board and CL ownership. That sound you're hearing is likely the ABC pump (tandem pump) and the sound is usually the first signs of an impending pump faulure. They call it tandem pump because it's 2 pumps in 1, the power steeting pump and ABC pump, in tandem (no pun). If you're not familiar with the way ABC works, you should avoid even thinking about doing this yourself. It's a VERY involved process.

ABC is actually always on so I'm not sure what you mean by "works after turning the car on then off then on once again...." Are you referring to an error in the instrument cluster or one of the button lights on your console? Is the ride level OK or is the car slammed to the ground?

Oil obviously should not be spewing out from anywhere. Did you check the power steering and ABC dipsticks if they're loose and the fluid levels? Where exactly do you see the oil leaking? I ask because if you have an oil leak and the level gets too low, your pump will get fried due to lack of lubrication. If you're lucky, the fluid is just critically low which is causing the noise from the pump. If you're not so lucky, the pump has gone bad due to natual causes or low fluid.

Sorry to say, but this looks like an expensive trip to the dealer. You're lookin at an estimated $3,000 repair for the pump assuming the remaining ABC components are satisfactory.

Good luck and let us know the outcome

GUYS - my ABC pump was just replaced by MB Dartford because I was hearing a slight grinding noise from my power steering - apparently the power steering pump and ABC pump are one and the same!!

So if your after getting teh pump replaced before yoru warrenty goes - listen out for a slight grining noise when you turn the sterring wheel from left to right at idle - as soon as you build up revs it goes.

The dealership said it was something to do with flow - when at idle the pump wasnt working enought to force flow of oil and hence the grinding noise! Sure enough with a new ABC pump - all is well

hope this helps you guys out getting those EXPENSIVE pumps replaced! It took my dealership from 9am to 6pm to do the work!

Angry Power Steering problems

Hi guys

hope someone here can help me.
i've had some problems with my 2000 Cl 500 this is my first ever MB.
and already had alot of problems, 2weeks ago i suddenly could not turn , as if the power steering just failed. took it to the mb dealer and they said i hade to replace the abc pump because it is 2 in 1 with the power steering. did that it cost me 5000usd for pump and work hours. last week i called them again and told them it felt kind of weird hard in the steering when driving, but when holding still it was easy to turn ? took it back today , and they made a test everything seemed ok, hoose pump everything was ok nothing leaking. they said that it could be electrical ?`??? they have booked it in for 19oct. how much would it cost me now, i am planning to sell the car and go back to bmw 740 2005 never had any problems

$5000 for pump and labor? That seems a bit excessive to me.. the pump should be about $1600 and probably about $1500 worth of labor.

Just getting mine done in the UK, under MB used car warranty.
Cost would be £1500GBP
8 hrs labour @ £105GBP, pump @ £600GBP, filters, oil.
Colin.
