How many quarts of oil do we need when we change the oil on our cars?

Have any of you guys used topside oil drainer before? you use this to drain the oil from the top so you dont have to pick up the car to drain from the bottom. If you have which brand did you use and do you recomend it?

I just bought a topsider like siphon pump (holds 2 1/2 gallons) from Harbor Freight for $25. Haven't tried it yet, but will do so soon. If you order from Harbor Freight, it may take a very long time for it to arrive. Mine was back ordered for a good month and a half, so plan accordingly.

I can recommend the PELA extraction pump - the container holds approx. 6 liters - I have used it several times, works great. Check with your marine supply store.

Is there any benefit to extracting the oil from the top rather then letting it drain from the bottom, beside not being so messy?

I would guess there's only benefits from draining from the bottom as all the garbage will come out the bottom and not sit there.

I get OCD sometimes and after I drain all the oil, I'll pour in half a quart through and let it drain all the garbage out.

You get more

out the top because of the plug placement in the pan.Use mobil 1 0w40 and the proper filter and you will have no issues with dirt or sludge in the pan.
You may be disapointed in the harbor freight unit, they are hit and miss on quality for the oil extractor.Griots garage has a nice unit, mityvac and topsider also have nice models.
Griots is very high quality.

Diy oil change #2 on mercedesshop.com resource section diy articles is a good diy to follow for extraction method.

ohlord, you beat me to it. The Harbor Freight pump is a real POS. It took me at least 4 hours to get all the oil out. The oil was dripping like an IV and the hose collapsed from the vacuum pressure. On top of that, it kept loosing vacuum which required alot of additional pumping throughout the process. Worst part of all, I parked my car at the entrance of my garage, half in and half out (in 30 degree weather) so I couldn't even get a floor jack under the car to drain the rest from the pan. Oil filter was out already and I couldn't start the car. I was stuck using that damn pump. The oil was warm (cold by the time I finished) and the hose tip was cut at an angle to prevent vacuum lock but still no dice.

On a positive note, I called Harbor Freight and they refunded my money including shipping and I don't have to send the pump back to them. I'll keep it my garage for the lawn mower.

Next time around, I'm probably gonna pick this up off eBay:

It's electric so no workout necessary. The video also proves that it actually works and is pretty fast.

Moral of the story, test your pump on some other liquid to make sure it works BEFORE proceeding on your car.
