Shifter in P(park) sticks?

My '02 CL600 shifter in P sticks. She is difficult to get out of P to put her in gear. When I force the shifter out of P the shifter is right on and smooth.
What is the fix? Anybody has experienced the same?

There is a plastic part that keep the you from shifting out of park without pressing on the brake. Unfortunately, over the time, that plastic is broken (not sure what it's called) causing what you are experiencing. I suggest not to drive it until it's fixed because it could leave you strangled. Dealer would want around $2K to replace it although the plastic piece should not cost more than a few bucks. Do a search on the R230 forum as several of them have experienced it before.

Edit: looks like slonar21 just beat me to it LOL

Thanks both of you.
I just resolved most of my ABC and ESP/ABS light issues. Thought already that "problem free" driving for a while would not last?!

How do I get the center console out to get to the Shifter?

I have taken the wood piece and radio out. Now I need to take the center console out of my CL to get to the shifter but am stuck.

Does anybody have a YouTube video or step by step instruction process to get the shifter out of a CL? How to remove the center console to get to the shifter?

I have found other Mercedes model step by steps but the CL600 is not the same console. I am almost there to fix my Park stuck problem.

Great links for a w220 S class Mercedes, however, the CL has a complete different console and different from the S model.
The YouTube getting the front console out was very helpful and worked great.

Now all I need is a little help with the console removal for the w215 to get to the Shifter?

Yes. Very common all the way back to when the car was only a few years old. The same for the w220 or S-class models and others.
The part is for sale in either plastic or metal. When you search for this problem you will run into companies that have the part for sale and install instructions.
The part is not needed. It simply activates when you press the brake to put the car into gear. You can do without it as you press the brakes anyway when you put a car into gear.
Now if I only could find the step-by-step process to remove the console.
On advice of Jud Chapin I am going to attempt to remove the shifter without removing the console. I see the 3 screws that hold down the shifter but getting it out...?

My CL600 Parking-stuck issue is fixed

Here are the steps:
- First take out your radio console
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWWj14ID3Lw
- I removed the shifter without taking the middle console out of the car. This is what I had to do:
Cut the portion of the console brace that covers the shifter. This does not hurt the integrity of the console and is absolutly needed to lift the shifter up and to be able to get to the rear 2 screws with your Hex-tool. You cannot get on top with most hex tools as the location is straight below the brace.
I have showed pictures to see what the brace removal looks like.
- You have to push the AC tunnels aside a little to get to the rear screws to remove the shifter. This is not too difficult.
Once you have the screws out the shifter pops out. The linkage is attached towards the rear of the shifter so by pulling the shifter up as much as you can you can get to the linkage in the car itself. You have to pry a little. I showed you the picture. Once the linkage is of the shifter comes right out.
- This is the link to how open the shifter
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDUmdD3koqE&NR=1

- I took out the notorious broken plastic pieces that no longer released my P and did not replace with a new one. This is not necessary and I find the car easier to put in gear. You still have to put the car in P to take the key out. Nothing has changed.
- To hook the linkage back on all you have to do is to make sure linkage clip is in its place on the gearbox linkage and the shifter pops right in place.
- It is a little hard to push the shifter in between the AC tunnels when re-installing it. It seemed harder than taking her out of its place. This takes a bit of force and prying.
After the shifter is back in place the rest is easy.
I did find that the cup holder and the arm rest pieces you have to remove need to be installed before you put the radio console back in place.
Found this out the hard way. But I have gotten pretty good at removing the whole piece that it is no longer a big deal.
I hope I have helped people. This is the perfect method short of taking the whole console out of the car.
Taking the complete middle console out for just the little brace interference is so much work. Unless someone can explain to you how to do it this is a very close second choice. Without any integrity or beauty consequences.
And save you lots of time and money. Good luck .

i've been researching this and found that you can get an aluminum piece to replace the plastic. anyone have any experience with these? i've only found one post about them where person said he heard vibration in the shifter after installation. any truth to this, or bad install?

I don't know where to get the piece. My MB shop tells me they have replaced the metal piece for the plastic piece several times. That must mean they are available. Probably though Mercedes Benz.
I doubt the replacement metal piece will cause vibration sounds. All the thing does is push down the flip piece back into the solenoid. Otherwise it just hangs in the same spot inside the shifter doing nothing.
Check this company that shows the replacement part. They sound like they made the piece themselves or call MB.
