The amp is located next to a bunch of critical components in the trunk, and they won't work without the amp in place (they're in a fiber optic chain). Also, some of the fiber could have been cut or broken when the amp was removed. You want to look really closely into this and make sure it's repairable.

Window components can also be very expensive to replace, including the track and such. I would be weary if this car needs several thousand in parts and labor to get running again.

One word of advice: DON'T. Anyone can buy a Mercedes, but not everyone can maintain one. It may be only $8000, but it is still a $100K car, maintenance-wise. These cars have too many electronics that are prone to failure. You'll be wishing that you kept your C230. Trust me on this.

2002 cl500
I agree with Ghaffar

My 2002 CL500 is probably worth about 10k right now and I've spent close to $4500 alone in 2011 fixing this and that (many abc issues)

I actually spent more then that. I'm lucky because my friend is a mechanic at the dealer so I get a break on labor and parts. With a HOOK UP I STILL spent $4500 up to this point

Regular maintenance like the fuel filter, spark plugs, oil changes etc arent that bad. It's when you have ABC issues that the dealer can only diagnose with their equipment. I don't know to many shops that have the rodeo machine which is pretty much a requirement when doing any ABC work if I'm not mistaken

Stay away. It's a beautiful car but if you don't have the money to fix it, don't bother.

I wouldnt buy anything older than a 2003

If you can only afford an older CL at least buy a 2003 or newer. They will all cost you money to fix but you won't be happy with the old technology of the small screen. Also its a 12 year old car maybe 13 depending on the production date. So hold up on anything older than 2003, that is just my opnion.

As much as I like the CL, I think you made a much better choice with the CLK500.

Yea me to I like Mercedes don't think I will ever stray from the brand (e class coupe next) but I like to drive the car not have it in the shop so the cl and it's abc issues would aggravate me and now with the money I'll spend on abc issues I can customize my clk

Great choice! With the 5.0L V8, you have no shortage of power. That was our first Mercedes when they first came out in fall '02 IIRC. No ABC whoas! How many miles on her?

Best of luck to you on that acquisition, I guess you will be moving over to the W209 section now. Yeah, no ABC problems for sure, I understand those have interior trim issues though. The 5.0 is a great engine as long as it has been maintained.

They're great cars...and for miles, as long as the previous owner took care of it and performed all of the necessary repairs, you should be fine. Those 5.0L's with that 5-spd are solid.
