NO Authority to Start Engine?

NO Authority to Start Engine?
On my 2002 CL500, I am getting intermittent refusal to attempt to start. I am guessing that the anti -theft circuits are causing the problem. That is the KEY, the IGNITION SWITCH and the GEAR SELECTOR not talking to each other properly. It is the same with both keys, so I do not think they are the problem, so how do I decide between the other two?

This is a EIS error. Either they electronic key has gone bad, or something in the system that follows the EIS flow chart.
The easiest way to diagnose is with the workshop diagnostic computer.

The theory is great, but in practise the STAR used by my indy does not give any useful info.
Are there different quality STARs?
Such that the main dealer would get better results?

Thanks for your replies gentlemen.
My INDY has tried his STAR on it but with no useful results. As Its the same with both keys I assume that it must be either the Ignition s/w or the Gear Selector's locks, does that make sense to you guys?
If so which should I change first?
Also, would the main dealer have a cleverer STAR, or are they all much the same?

What system is your INDY using? The original Mercedes Xentry/DAS SDS system? Clone ? Or some other system.
I know the Mercedes DAS SDS has full diagnostic testing and coding of the entire EIS system (now actually refereed to as EIZ).
