CHROMED ALUMINUM AMG WHEELS
perhaps some will recall my posts from a few years back. i acquired a 2006 cl55 from its first lessee via the m-b sfo dealer.
very few miles and some oddities. for a brilliant silver car, it was unusual for its beige brown interior.
all the options.
but one that has confused me was that the lessee went for chromed wheels. and this was an ordered option.
she knicked them up pretty good along the rim. and the sfo dealer didn't improve them cosmetically. i am told that chromed wheels are pretty impervious to remediation.
the electrolytic corrosion along the rims induces slow leaks. i want to replace these chromed wheels.
what i would like to acquire would be amg wheels of the same design in unchromed aluminum.
but i am finding it difficult to access amg wheels on the net.
can anyone out there assist?
i should interject either a photo of these wheels or the option code. if you think you can assist, i shall furnish that tomorrow.

Newbie
Hi Slanz.
my merc was gutter rashed pretty bad and i repaired them with chrome powdercote.
I wasnt going to go that way but the only powder the guy had that looked as bright as the original was the chrome option. After sand blasting the marks had completely gone except for some tiny marks.. i was amazed as they looked very deep and I felt sure that they where right into the aluminium!
After the new chrome powder they look ace and you can hardly notice the slight blemish on the one realy bad rim.
I am just mentioning this as it may be a good option for you that is not expensive. will stop your leaks and make the car look good again until you find something better. It was only $120 AUD a rim to have bead blasted and coated.

MORE CONCERNING 2006 CL55 WHEELS
the wheels on my 2006 CL55AMG are driving me crazy. over the last year, they are all exhibiting slow to rapid leaks.
this has been attributed to the deterioration of the chrome plating along the sealing bead.
the vin# for this car is WDBPJ74J86A047141
on the monroney for this car, the wheels are identified as 19" monobloc alloys as an option.
alloy wheels direct.net, using this vin# as a reference identifies the original equipment wheels as AMG's with these M-B part numbers/specifications…
front: A2204001502[19x8.5, ET44]
rear: A2204001606[19x9.5, ET46]
finish: mercedes sterling silver, painted. spec 9709
BUT, these wheels all appear to be chrome plated.
so, my initial question was, were these "painted" wheels stripped than chrome-plated. or were they something other than "painted" AMG's
so today, i pulled the wheels to verify their M-B part numbers. in relief, the M-B star logo and the proper part numbers appear on one of the spokes, along with the dimensions and ET specification.
but, on another spoke appears this name in relief CROMODORA.
looking up CROMODORA SpA, it identifies itself as an o.e. supplier to M-B, AMG among other vehicle manufacturers.
so, i am wondering, did CROMODORA only supply chrome plated wheels as original equipment fittings?
in other words, did this CL55 have chrome-plated wheels fitted as original equipment back in 2006?
all info will be appreciated.
thnx.

I don't think Mercedes has ever put chrome plated aluminum wheels on a car from the factory. It is dangerous to do on cast wheels. You get what is know as hydrogen embrittlement that causes structural weakness in the wheels. Chrome wheels are usually a dealer aftermarket addition.

well, that was my thinking.
still, if benz fitted alloys from cromodora, would they have been chrome plated?
i have all of the benz docs, and the service records for this vehicle, no where is there any mention of any aftermarket wheels being fitted. and the relief parts i.d. identifies those aluminum cast wheels with a star logo and the m-b part numbers and specs on one spoke.
on another spoke, is the cromodora in relief.
and, as i said, cromodora identifies itself as an o.e. supplier of wheels to m-b and amg.

Just looked st the Cromodora web site in products and they show a wheel that looks like an AMG that is "shadow chromed" so it might be a possibility after all
