Dont know how much gas i have

Hello guys and gals im having a problem with my 2002 cl500 i just got this car from an auction and i love it but the most immediate problem i have is that i dont know how much gas i have in the car because the gauge is not working one minute it says i have 3/4 tank and the next it says im empty. i wanted to know if anyone else has ever had this problem and how did you fix it. i was just gonna have the mechanic change out the pump/sending unit and the fuel filter just to be safe tell me if this seems like over kill. Also what brake pads do you guys use to change the pads on the car i wanna do that but before i go to Autozone i wanted to know if there are better ones out there. Thanx in advance

You probably need to replace or maybe just clean the fuel level sending unit. Changing the fuel filter isn't a bad idea since you probably don't know when the last time it was replaced (if it ever was). I wouldn't bother changing the fuel pump now unless you know it's cooked.

thanks for that information i have been using the lucas gas treatment since the car has been sitting for almost 1 1/2 to try and get the tank clean and any deposits out it seems like it wants to work just having a hard time but im just gonna change it out. my mechanic also said that if its not that then there is a fuse box that goes bad on these cars and i would have to change the whole thing and thats like 400 big ones im hoping its just the sensor

Start by just changing the fuel sending unit and see what happens.

Use Chevron Techron instead of Lucas, works excellent.
