Curious as to the mechanical reason for ABC failure or non-failure?
Check this link out. It explains in detail the reason for failure and NON-failure of the ABC system.
Best info I have found on the system.
It's in German. So use your browsers translation feature.

The magnetic filter looks to be on the return side if I'm seeing it correctly. It would seem that if they could place right after the pump it would keep contamination out of the entire system. Their filter is better than without but does not appear ideal.
What someone needs to develop is a diverter valve after the pump that loops the fluid back around when the system senses a low pressure condition. That way the pump would see no damage if a hose were to blow.
It's interesting that they are saying to replace the oil every 20k to 30k when MB lists no schedule. I've never understood why MB does not give change intervals on the fluid. I agree with what the site is saying but it doesn't address the need to proactively change the hoses before they fail. When one fails, it grenades the ABC pump if driven more than a short time. Blown hoses has got to be a bigger killer of pumps than long term contamination issues.

The filter is in the return side because it would blow apart if it was in the high pressure side
While I agree with maintenance , a fluid and filter change costs $700+ at the dealer . If you were doing this every 12-18000 miles as they recommend (every 20-30000 km) you'd have done it more than 5 times before the car hits 97000 miles and spent over $3500 just on fluid changes alone

You can do the fluid and filter change yourself. Even at $3500, that's about the going rate for an ABC pump. You will go through at least one pump by the time you hit 97k miles. Mine was on its third before that point.
