Sticky steering wheel buttons

I purchased a 2003 CL600 a few years ago in like new condition and at the time 28000 miles, now about 39000. Love the car, my favorite toy! It's garage kept and well maintained. What seemed like overnight, all the button controls on the steering wheel have become "sticky." Almost like something was sprayed on them. The rest of the leather is perfect. I wondered if something like Ammoral had somehow reacted with them. My mechanic tells me it's a common aging problem and just live with it, too much to fix. Just wondering if anybody else has experienced this and might have a solution. They get uglier overtime as lint sticks to them, etc. Any ideas? Thanks.

Thank you very much, I'll give it all a try. Great to see other people are equally frustrated!! I have never seen anything like it on any other car, all less expensive, that I've owned in the past. Again, thanks for taking the time to post!
