2002 CL500 Shaking and Rumbling from Rear
I have a weird shake coming from the rear of my 2002 automatic Mercedes Benz CL500, with 200,000km.
This only occurs when accelerating from a stop, and causes the car to shake violently until i hit about 20km/h, after which, the car operates as normal. Here are some clues I've gathered.
-occurs only when accelerating from a stop (longer and more pronounced when accelerating slowly)
-no noise is heard past 20-30km/h
-no noise is heard if you allow the car to move forward without stepping on the gas
-occurs regardless of what gear you accelerate from stop with (1st, 2nd, 3rd, can be selected through shift knob despite being an automatic)
-occurs during turning as well
-causes the car to shake, and not accelerate as normal
-traction light comes on during the rumble
-a pump can be heard from the engine bay
I've taken it to a mechanic, who said it was the wheel bearings, but I wasn't convinced, as there is no noise at high speed, and very little play in the wheel.
Thanks for any reply

I was thinking torque converter until I got to the end... Traction light and pump from the engine bay means it's the car fighting acceleration with the brakes via ASR/Traction control.
You probably do have a wheel bearing or speed sensor fault, causing an erratic signal and attempted intervention that doesn't work, until maybe it hits a speed where it won't try anymore, not really sure why it stops at a point.
I'd suggest having the car scanned properly with SDS, will tell you more than me guessing at it.

Thank you so much ItalionJoe1!!!
I was turning off the traction control (ESP) from inside, but this time, I pulled the fuses (2,34) and the problem is gone! So time to replace the speed sensors I guess
